Snapped this pic soon as I shot him. You can see him laying on left side that logging road. Able to pull my Appalachian Hoss right to him. Sure glad of it!

50yds exactly stepped off. Deer stood on hind legs flipped backwards, hit ground, kicked a while, over with. Even caught the case in air upon ejection. Don't get no better!

Kind of difficult to see clearly, is your rifle a Model 64 Winchester ?

It's an 1971 NRA Centennial model, which in 72n73 the same rifle is a 64a. So yes it is really.

Had a senior moment I reckon. After I asked the question I recalled your recent thread and pics of your Model 64's.
Congrats on your harvest, your part of the world looks pretty nice.

What a lovely fall hunt you had. Great when they end like that -- sure and quick and not down in the bottom of a brush-choked canyon.
What a handsome 94 you used to do it, too. 8)

Excellent! If you hunt the woods, the 30-30 is as close to a perfect cartridge as you'll find. I've had fantastic performance from it. Every deer but one has dropped like it was electrocuted but one. And that one only went 50 yards.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

If you meet anyone who questions whether the .30-30 can get it done, you might encourage them to go back to School and pay attention this time. :D

Jim I'm of a mind that at least a good portion of the negative rumors of the 30-30 came from those who couldn't shoot an iron sighted rifle, then put blame on the cartridge, and you know how people want to swallow untried talk and they multiply into a Lotta BS! And at same time a scoped 300 Blackout (whatever its called or what it is, IDK) becomes the 8th wonder of the world, stuff like this!

yeah ... I'm sure that has a lot to do with it ... and a lot of times it is just people spreading what they heard someone else say instead of testing it themselves to see how things work.

Or pass them a copy of "Hooked on Phonics" so they can learn to read . . .

but there is a lot of internet ignorance, one of my favorites is "you can't make a knife out of rebar, everybody knows that". I lost count of how many times that's been reiterated . . .

they are dumbfounded when I ask them what kind of rebar a nuclear power plant is built with, or a super-highway . . .

there are still people driving cars with the windows rolled up and a paper mask on ! .

now on the 30-30, isn't it a 30-06 round with half the powder? LOL
