Lest We Forget . . .

Post by Bruce Scott »

Image

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Bruce S: location?? I looked up the UK cemeteries at Ypres, Passendale, Gallipoli, and the Somme. Could not find the building. Same for the French at Verdun. Is it the Australian National War Memorial??

Correct Ray, it's the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The photo taken in 2018 shows some of the 62,000 hand-crafted poppies in the garden in memory of 62,000 Australian soldiers, who died in World War I.

Also in Canberra, the Australian - American Memorial at Defence Headquarters:

In 1948 the Australian-American Association resolved ‘to establish a memorial in Canberra in the form of a monument or statue, to perpetuate the services and sacrifices of the United States forces in Australia and to symbolise Australian-American comradeship in arms’.

The sight of that field of poppies reminded me of this song....

We are expecting trouble at the Cenotaph with Palestinian supporters taking over the streets in London.
I have always considered Armistice Day to be the most sacred day of the year. Lest We Forget .

John, that certainly seems unwarranted and disrespectful of the dead. I am sorry for your country.

From what I saw on the internet about 14,000 British patriots turned up, the press called them far right wing thugs but I didn't see any pro Palestinian supporters turn up during the two minute silence. There seems to be some fake news of course in the newspapers.
Tomorrow the King will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph as will other royals and the political leaders. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the ceremony remains peaceful.

I read the other day that there are more Muslims in the UK than in Lebanon..... :roll:
