From the Mach One to the Pinto…
.
Just thinking how the 60’s & 70’s transitioned into the 80’s & 90’s
Wonder when we’ll be on another ‘high’….
The Trump years were good but taken away too soon…

Re: From the Mach One to the Pinto…
My first car was a heavily used Mustang Mach 1 that I bought for $600. That engine was incredible. Of course it sucked gas like there was no tomorrow, and I was trying to fill it during the oil embargo of the '70's making barely $2/hr. I swear the gas gauge fell if I even looked at the gas pedal... but it was worth it. Then I wrapped it around a tree.
A few cars after that was the Ford Escort. Talk about night and day.
I actually got lucky on this business trip. They gave me a Mustang for my rental car. Brings back some memories, though it is nothing power-wise compared to that Mach 1...

That said, I have an old 396 Cheyenne. My new truck will effortlessly and nearly noiselessly hold 90mph on a turnpike with the AC humming and satellite radio broadcasting Fox News— however, driving the old one is almost a religious experience— it’s fast, loud, noisy, drafty, smells like an old truck, and will start to shake when approaching triple digit speeds because it’s an aerodynamic abomination, but Lordy the noise coming from that big block Chevy as it creeps over 4000 rpm is music to a gearheads ears and rarely fails to bring the smiles

My 1st car that I got to keep for more than one day was a '59 chevy Apache with a 354 Desoto Hemi and 3 spd on the tree I bought from my Dad for $400. I traded that as soon as it was paid off to the mechanic that installed the motor in it for a '55 Chevy Handyman 2 dr wagon. Loved that station wagon, fit my 9'2" surfboard inside. The 283ci and powerglide were perfect for a CA kid that loved to waterski and surf. I've had a lifelong love of Chevy V-8s ever since. I've flirted with a couple VW bugs and a Ford Cortina, but have nearly always had at least one Chevy V-8.Ysabel Kid wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 7:50 pmMy first car was a heavily used Mustang Mach 1 that I bought for $600. I bought this 1965 GTO in 1971 and have kept it all these years. I used to see those post 1971 Mach 1’s in my rear view mirror…Ysabel Kid wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2023 7:50 pm My first car was a heavily used Mustang Mach 1 that I bought for $600. I'm old school, so even though almost any new hi performance car will run circles around most of the old cars, I'll still take an older car just for the old school cool they have! Drive a new muscle car and most people don't even notice it unless you're showing off and laying down black stripes. But drive an old hotrod or muscle car and people of all ages will be smiling and giving you thumbs up, even when you're idling or just poking along!
