Range Time With The .45 - Again

Post by JimT »

Taking advantage of some of the cooler mornings I was able to get to the Range again with the Linebaugh Ruger .45 Colt. I had found some bullets I had cast of pure lead and decided to load them and see how they would do. They were the old Colt 255 gr. by Lyman #454190. I sized them .452".

I loaded these over 6.0 gr. of Green Dot for fairly mild load. I don't think they broke 800 fps. Very pleasant shooting. But accuracy was not consistent. I had no leading with them but they did not do as well as the ones cast from a harder alloy.

The other load I tested was the Keith SWC using the RCBS 45 - 255KT mold. These were cast of harder alloy and sized .452".

These have always been accurate for me. Since I have been using Green Dot I wanted to see how they held up and they did not disappoint me. I loaded these over 7.5 gr. of Green Dot. Velocity and recoil was on par with 8.5 gr. Unique near as I could tell.

Again, the barrel and chambers stayed clean .. no leading. Recoil with these, while some heavier than the 6 gr. load with the other bullet, was mild. I think I will load some more of these and test them at 50 yards.

Amazing! I struggle to keep all shots on a 8 X 10 target at 25 yards.

I shot these targets using an Outers Pistol Perch. I wanted to test the accuracy of the loads, not my personal offhand accuracy.

It's not as good as a Ransom Rest or a machine rest. You can still screw up a shot. But for extended testing it does reduce the human factor quite a bit.
