Old Lyman sight ID.

Post by 2ndovc »

I bought a cool old sproterized Springfield 03A3 that I picked up at my dealer's today. Looks like UPS used it for a speed bump.

When we opened the box, the rear sight fell on to the floor in three pieces.

I think it's a Lyman 48, but that's just from pictures around the net.
Hoping some of you guys may know for sure and where I could find a replacement or parts.

The shipping dealer said he's going to open a claim, but I know how that goes.

Any info is always appreciated.

I found a guy online years ago, when I called him it was obvious he was quite old and going out of business, I didn't save his contact info but he had the site I needed!

Sad about your site, good luck finding a new/replacement parts!

According to my book "Old Gunsights" by Nick Stroebel, your sight is indeed a Lyman 48-third variation long slide. The windage adjustment screw is broken, but a replacement screw is available from gun Parts Corp.:

Hope this helps!

I appreciate the link.
Here's another picture.

The whole windage assembly has been snapped off and the horizontal piece is bent. I'll order the screw, and keep scrounging.

I think the seller is as bummed as I am and he's trying to help as well.

Dang, Jason. It seems to me that UPS is a little rougher on packages than the USPS lately. Hope you get that sight running. What a classic!

Yeah, I'm a sucker for sproterized military rifles, especially 03A3s. This one is really different too, The conversion to the box magazine w/ a cartridge cut off key is what got my attention.

I'll get it up and running eventually. :D
