Another primitive weapon
Seems there are several here interested in bows and other primitive weapons so I thought I would share this. It was made and given to me by a friend who is into flint knapping in appreciation for letting him hunt on my place. Blade is obsidian.

Re: Another primitive weapon
Really nice knife and gift, question are they as fragile as they look.

Re: Another primitive weapon
I can't really say cuz I've never tried to cut anything with it, but I am getting curious myself. I think I might try it out soon. I know the edge angle is much steeper than any chert weapon I have found. Not sure if he did that for edge durability, or cuz it was only intended for display.

Dern cool looking regardless.

Obsidian, when properly knapped is beyond surgical sharp. It will cut you just for looking at it

What he said. Edge is still pretty fragile though. It will cut you just for looking at it.
There's a story (sorry, too lazy to look it up), a guy had surgery done with several blades he made.

My Little Grandsons saw some flint napping videos . Told them about flint ridge in southern Ohio, and all the arrowhead we saw as kids. We watched this on you tube and they about Flipped. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VCYlg9w7dE

Re: Another primitive weapon
Yep Pitchy that is Great. . As a kid we would find pieces of flint and bust them up with a hammer . some would be extremely thin and after my Grandfather told Me all about flint weapons We had to try it out. And We managed to make cuts like razor blades on our hands.
I bet that primitive man could make a kill and if the stone head was intact they could use their napping skills to bring it back to hunting sharp!

Re: Another primitive weapon
They are pretty fragile to answer the question above but only if you twist or bend them. The edge holds really well and if you damage it is pretty easy to fix. However, the Native Americans switched to metal as soon as it was availabl

Another thing ya don`t hear a lot about is the copper age, guess they used it a lot here in the Duluth area.

Re: Another primitive weapon
My wife gave me one that looks very much like yours. A rock hound and flint knapper made it. Mine's is in a wooden box he made. thinking of replacing the lid with glass and gluing it into a bookcase... they deserve to be entertained once in a while. but klutz that i am i could amputate that too easy...Oldncrusty wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 2:14 am Seems there are several here interested in bows and other primitive weapons so I thought I would share this. Re: Another primitive weapon
They make great cutters for sure, but do not try to pry with them. When the lose their edge , knapping a new one is the routine. Worked well for thousands of years.

That is beyond amazing!
On the show "Mountain Men" Tom Oar knaps knife blades and arrowheads. Takes a lot of practice for sure to get good at it.
Thanks for sharing.
