That .264 is indeed a fine cartridge, but now the high-velocity 6.5mm field is so crowded that it's easy to lose track of.
With modern powders that reach peak temperature on past the throat, this thing would not have had the barrel-burning rep is has so long been saddled with.

I agree on the .25-06 and the .35 Whelan deserving a chance, but not so much on the others. I don't agree on his evaluation of the .25-06 as being as versatile as he says. The .25-06 is a fantastic medium sized game cartridge that will bring down deer at pretty long ranges. But for larger game like elk it's not good at all. I watched my nephew put 3 shots into a bull elk and the elk just kept going. Finally my brother put a 180 gr. from his .30-06 into the elk and it dropped easily. All shots under 75 yds. So it's great, just not for anything larger than deer.
The .35 Whelan on the other hand with it's 200 gr. bullet will easily take all sorts of large game.

.25/06 (The National Cartridge of Texas) wouldn't be my first choice in an elk rifle but it'll work with the right bullets. A friend of mine won't hunt elk with a .30/06 since putting 5 of the wrong bullet into an elk that didn't drop once upon a time. I rolled one with a 7mm/06 and 139 Interlock one time, folks say that probably won't work either.

I like the 264 and 25-06 just fine having killed more than a few deer with both cartridges . All the 6.5mm cartridges except the Crudmoor I’ve owned and killed with . I’ve used the Whelen and killed deer with doing an admirable job I might add but I’ve never been a big advocate of 35 cal cartridges . Actually it’s kinda funny that the 264 was mentioned as in the last couple months I’ve been contemplating the possibility of getting another Pre 64 Model 70 in 264 Win Mag . Although it’s kinda pointless as I still have a 6.5-06 and a 26 Nosler . The 25-06 I’ve also owned several and liked them quite a bit however at the moment don’t have one . Do however have a 6mm-06 and the previously mentioned 6.5-06 . Matter of fact put the smack down on an 8 pointer in December with the 6mm-06 shooting the Berger 115 VLD bullet .

The 6.5 Swede cartridge is often overlooked by many shooters just because of more popular American cartridges that are similar. But the 6.5x55 is one of the finest cartridges ever developed, and was way ahead of it's time back when Sweden adopted it as their military cartridge. It's an even better sporting vs. military cartridge!
