Postal Match VI is underway!!!

Post by TedH »

Hey all,

Ranch Dog has asked me to ramrod the Leveraction Postal Match here on Leverguns, as others are doing on the various other forums to try and lighten the load for Ranch Dog.

Looks like same rules apply as last year, 'cept we'll just be shooting for braggin' rights. So get those leverguns busy and get yer shootin' fine tuned for hunting season.

There have been some great shooters and fine leverguns taking part in the previous matches. They put up some targets that would make any bolt action guy green with envy. I'm sure this year will be no different.

Ranch Dog has the new website up and running for this years match. It has all the info that you'll need to get started. Check it out.

http://www.levergunpm.com/

If you still have any questions regarding this years match please let me know.

For those that plan on participating, please don't wait till the end to send in a pile of targets. It'll be easier to get all the new shooters registered early, then it's a simple matter to update scores/targets as you shoot more and improve your standings.

I think it would be a great idea to have a sticky
where we can post levergun members targets
guns and loads....and maybe at the end of the year...
give out some kind of award....for best shooter!

I've never shot a postal match but I might try this. I quit my local range because of the president elect was a butt. He's no longer there and I was asked to come back. I joined a couple of months ago and have yet to get my schedule clear to go. I think I'll try and remedy that.

Time to dust off the .44 Mag Trapper! Like Griff said, maybe a couple a times at least.

I did it last year and it was a blast. Hopefully the weather will be good enough to go shoot tomorrow.
If you have always wanted to try a postal match, this is a good place to start.

I'm in, just found the site, looks like fun.

1. Clean and assemble rifle
2. Where is that case of ammo?
3. Open sights means 50 yds, have to get the rest so I can shoot both classes.
4. Print out a bunch of targets (hmmmm, didn't someone post somewhere they had them printed up?)
5. Go to range, put holes in targets. Fill out targets (paperwork), SAVE targets, mail in the good ones.
6. Reload the cases. What bullets do I use? Picked up several molds last year, gotta dig out the casting gear.
7. Return to 5, repeat.

Is there a prefered rest to use for the benchrest class that works well with leveractions?

No mechanically adjustable rest is allowed. That means pretty much any type of sandbag under the forearm and the buttstock is supported by you, not another bag.

Don't forget there are also two classes of "offhand" shooting. Which is just what it sounds like. Stand up, shoulder yer rifle and shoot. No support of any kind.

Ranch Dog is working on a website just for the Leveraction Postal Match. It should be up any time now. It will have all the rules, stats, etc.

You can check out the last link in my first post in this thread and it will take you to the site from last years match, but the rules for shooting and the targets remain the same for this year. The targets can also be found there.

I will post a link to the new website for the match as soon as it becomes active.

This is a link to the website from last years match. The rules are the same for this years match. Click the link and look for the tab in the upper left labeled "The Rules".

Ted,

Yeah, I got offhand part (no equipment needed to be purchased, and my legs are working).

I would only have 2 classes to shoot in as there ain't no scope on my rifle.

Anyhow, went down to local store and picked up a Caldwell Tack Driver for $80 (kinda high but didn't have to pay shipping). This is about 8 inches high overall and I can turn it sideways to use all that height and allow lever throw. Spending money is how I make sure I don't miss out on something (money spent = gotta do it).

I'm in. We're kicked off the silhouette range until safety improvements are made so this is a good way to keep shooting.

But it seems that every time I put up a target, some axxhxxe with an AR-15 takes pot shots at it.

Quote from the Official Rules.....

"Bench Match
Shooters in this match will shoot with a forearm, sand bag type rest only."

UPDATE

Word from the boss man is that shooting sticks are ok, so long as there not attached to the rifle and target is entered in the Bench Match.

Adjustable rests are NOT useable for the match, but if you want an affordable good solid adjustable shooting rest suitable for LEVER guns, then you can get one from...ACE hardware. Seriously, I made my own for maybe $50 in parts and some scrap lumber. The "complete instructions" were lost on the old leverguns site, but someday I'll re-post them. My kids and I use the rest all the time for sighting in, especially for guns with levers, extended magazines, or that recoil heavily (a detachable tray holds up to 5 bags of lead shot). It helps get guns sighted in fast and easily.

For our actual practice shooting, we either use an ordinary sandbag, or a folded up coat; those represent more likely types of surfaces we'll rest on in the real world.

Thanks for the interest in the Match fellows and I see that TedH, the guy Ram Roding the Match here on Leverguns, is doing a good job of stirring you up!

I'm busy getting www.levergunpm.com tuned up and will soon have all the statistics from last year up so that you can see what has been shot in the past.

Had an opportunity today to shoot a little, couple more for the Ranch Dog Postal VI:

Off Hand/Open Sights, my '94 Win Trapper with factory leaf sight chambered in .44 mag...one flyer, almost every time!
Image

Guess my 8.5 grain loads of Unique behind a 240 grain SWCL reaches there limit at around 100 yards. Off the bench was worse at 100 yards than standing off hand at 50 yards! 'Course it is almost impossible to make out the target at 100 with my old eyes. Can make out the paper and what looks like a black blob in the middle, but that's it.

No scopes on any of them.

lever is correct. Rifles in this match must be a repeating rifle, that uses a lever to cycle ammunition from a magazine into the chamber.
