230gn bullets in 38 special +P
...now listed in hodgon's online load data. 2 of the old pin bullets with official data again. An 855fps load as well, that' would have some stopping power!

Wow. I am impressed. That's a lot of real estate moving at 855 fps!
Re: 230gn bullets in 38 special +P
Great! Too bad I don't have any of those powders! Gives me an idea of where to start with the Ba10 that I do have though.

I'm having trouble finding the 855 ft/sec data

I use a 200 grain soft lead bullet at 625 fps in my defense carry guns. The British proved it in ww1.....has to be that velocity......it was written that it stopped as well as a 45 Auto.....that's what you want to do .."stop".
Re: 230gn bullets in 38 special +P
You have to select the no 9 load to see it. That seems pretty hot for a 38! That’s 45 ACP performance. Yes I get it’s soft lead that can be pushed faster than coppery things but still. I bet that would be a handful in my Charter Arms Undercover or my Airweight. Be sweet in my 586 though.

The Penn Thunderhead bullet, designed for shooting at bowling pin matches.44shooter wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 4:52 pm You have to select the no 9 load to see it. That seems pretty hot for a 38! Penn and Badman bullets are two of the main casters of the pin bullets.

Penn also lists their own load data. They go as high as 7 grains Accurate No.9 for 883fps(!) in 38+P and list pressure of 21800 or so

Re: 230gn bullets in 38 special +P
wondering similar doc. Are they much longer than a standard 180gn JHP. They may be okay with the 1:16 twist of ruger 77/357 or 1:18 of new marlins and 1873 repros.
Re: 230gn bullets in 38 special +P
I never knew such things existed. It’s really an odd duck. Really long and heavy but still fast for a pistol bullet. Really soft, therefore slow for a rifle. I can see why it would be great for pins if the accuracy is there. Standard 38 isn’t very authoritative on a bowling pin. 357 will knock them down. 3006 will move them on down the range.
Re: 230gn bullets in 38 special +P
Neat to see more published data with heavyweights in 38 Special. When we ran pin matches at the club I used the Lyman 358627 which is a 215-220gr semiwadcutter designed for the 357 Maximum. It was pretty authoritative for a small borebut the 41 Mag or 44 Special were a much surer bet.

That bullet out of a 77/357 might make a good mouse fanny burp round.

About the only footage out there- a gent from Europe loading them in 357. In the second vid he chono's 924fps from a 4" barrel and 1087fps from an 1894 carbine.
