Load data 358 Winchester

Post by Wes »

Does anyone out there use RL15 for their 358 Win? Also wondered what everyones favorite loads were for the 358 Win.

358win! now your taking my language  . I have a BLR in 358 and love it. I haven't used RL15 thou. I'm currently using 4198, I'm setting in a hotel right now so I don't have load data with me. I've been using the Hornady 200gr SP and have had good luck with it, next I want to work up a load with the 225gr Nosler Partition. There's several others on here, including Tycer, that also load for the 358 and will be able to better answer your question.

I do not load for a .358 but I appreciate the cartridge's virtues and think it is highly underrated. I would think that RL-15 might be just a little slow. The .358 has a higher expansion ratio and RL-15 might not be optimum. I agree that H-4895 might be a really good choice and H-4198 being slightly faster might shine as well. I am partial to the Hodgdon Extreme line of extruded powders do to their temp. insensitivity. Regards. 1886.

49 grains of 3031 behind a Rem 200 grain corelock was the last load I hunted with. WLR primer.

Ricky, what's the OAL of those I left with you in TX?

45 grains of Reloder7 shot well too.

I have a BLR in 358 too. 49.5 grains of Varget (compressed) under a Hornady 200 grain spire point and CCI BR-2 primer works well. Varget is the only powder I have worked with that gives me exact duplicate FPS readings in a short string. I did find a reference in Hornady's #6 that RL15 was appropriate for the 250 grain bullets, but not the 200 grain. I could also see how IMR 3031 would work well and I will be trying some under a 225 grains Barnes because I run out of case capacity of the Varget before I run out of pressure. I think the 3031 will "fit" better with the very long Barnes bullet.

I shoot it's almost identical cousin the 356 Win., and it likes H4895 alot.(tried IMR 4350, IMR 4320, H322 before this and it likes the 4895 the best)

50.5 grain's of WW748 give's me 2360 FPS (average from 20"bbl BLR) with a hornady 200 grn bullet. Very accurate. I could get higher velocities with different powder's but all I'm doing is hunting deer with shot's under 100 yd's. Rel 15 is kinda slow. I've used h4895 and Imr 3031.

Wes,
I'll bet your going to use 250gr bullets when you hunt those heavy timber bulls, aren't you?

Thats just what I'm thinking Mtngun. But I'm going to give the 200 and 225's a try just for fun. This little BLR will be my companion on packtrips hunting elk in the timber. Can't wait for fall now. Might even pack this while hunting moose.

Any powder with burning rates of 4198 on the fast side to 4320 on the slow end will work in the .358. I use mostly 4895, 4320, H-335, or BL-c2 in mine. For cast 200-225 grain bullets, 4895 has accuracy with velocity of around 2000 fps and is ample for whatever I want to use it on.

I use the latest Nosler manual max with IMR 4895 and the 225 Nosler Partition for 2375 fps from my BLR-81 and it shoots 1 1/4 @ 100 yds. I also use IMR 4064 with Hornady 200 round nose to get the same velocity but superb accuracy. Both of those bullets really let the wind out of white tail deer.

From Hodgdon's Data Reloading Center. It didn't cut and paste well, loads listed are starting load with Bullet Weight (Gr.) Manufacturer Powder Bullet Diam. C.O.L. Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure then same for max load. IMR 3031 is looking real good for both 200 and 225 grain bullets.

BTW - Paco's favorite bullet for the 358 - the Lyman 3589 or 358009 is a current group buy on castboolits - in flat nose and in a 3 cavity.

Alliant says RL-7 for 200grainers.

358 Win
• Rem. 200PSP

OAL 2.78, bbl 24", Prmr, WLR, RL-7 38grains, 2420fps, 46,100cup.

I would think that this is a starter load with that cup pressure. but let your good sense be your guide.

I did see some very interesting loads just in the Lee reloading pamphlet that comes with the .358 dies. I plan to try some. But I think Hodgdon powders have the rocket in this case. You might want to visit their website before you buy too much powder.
