Pigs at River Ranch w pics

Post by octagon »

The snow will cut our trip short and knowing this, I thumb in three shells, lever one in, and set my Winchester on half cock. I head up the mostly dry river, looking for a couple hat sized piggies for the wife to bbq. Five hundred yards later, I see a pig across the riverbed, 150 yards out, bobbing up and down, injured, moving opposite of the direction I've been going. He is much bigger than I want but I turn around, backtracking to where I started I cross the riverbed far in front and downwind of the injured hopper.
I ease up to about where I think Hoppy has made it and take three steps down a gametrail, I see him standing 60 yards out with 10 other pigs and 30 turkeys! Another step down the trail and the birds would have seen me and bolted with the pigs. I can just see the injured one through a small triangular hole in the brush. I raise the 26in octagon barrel and wait for him to go sideways...
This is a perfect magic moment that seems to be in slow motion. Ancient pecan and oak trees tower over the meadow by the river, where forty animals quietly feed close by, and are unaware of me. This is the rifle Dad gave me forty five years ago, to keep me excited about hunting with its iron sites, I know it well and I know with no question whatever that it will perform as it always has.
The pig goes sideways and the rifle speeds a 150g corelokt, a perfect chaos of turkeys and pigs run and flutter wildly to escape the thunder of my Winchester, and they mostly do escape but for one, who is bleeding his life on the winter rye in the meadow. I've helped this pig on to greener pastures, and he has helped get me to this spot, a perfect spot on the river. I sit with him for ten minutes to rest before the hike back, while the
quiet creeps back into the river channel.

The small to medium wild pigs taste the best to me. Once they get too big, you can't do much more than make sausage out of them.
