OT - Siamese Mauser Conversions

Post by Bruce Scott »

Has anyone any experience of the Siamese in 45-70? I am particularly interested in the magazine modifications needed and how well they feed.

IIRC, there are no magazine mods needed - the very feature that makes the Siamese Mauser the boltgun for this conversion.

The Siamese Mauser's bottom metal is slanted forward at an angle, to facilitate the feeding of large rimmed cartridges, with each rim ahead of the rim below it in the mag - not vertical like the standard German/Spanish/Turkish M-98 Mauser.

Navy Arms did some conversions on these. I think they simply rebarreled and restocked.

I've only worked on one, but if I remember right the feed rails have to be opened up so that the nose of a 45-70 will feed from the mag into the action. I only built the stock, we sent the action to E.R. Shaw and had it opened up. To my knoweledge It worked fine then. Hope this helps Abilene

Thanks for the replies. I also received a response elsewhere that indicates the need for opening the feed rails.

I found an action in very good shape and will proceed with the conversion.

It will be a real United Nations job - a Japanese built German rifle for the Thai army, modified in Australia for an American Cartridge.
