My son hunts on a hog hunt. He's back from Japan.
I got a 30-30,234, and other guns.
What would you use?

Re: This springe
between the two I'd like the 30-30
Re: This springe
30-30 lever gun is as ideal a hog rifle as there is for walk and stalk. Come up on a sounder and you may get three down before they 're scattered, depending on the cover.
A s/a in 7.62x39 would be a close second.
Night hunting is a different matter. There, an AR in 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC or 300 BO and a thermal sight is the way to go. Otherwise a bolt gun and a green light.

Re: This springe
The .30-30 will make 1 shot kills if the shooter does his part. What I am saying is that the .30-30 is enough as long as the bullet is put in a vital spot. A .243 is fine with a good heavy bullet, but the lighter bullets in a .243 may be too fast and too lightly constructed to take a wild pig. Wild pigs are not magically tough, but the gristle and scar tissue often found in the shoulder area of the bigger ones can affect bullet performance. I would suggest a good quality 170 grain .30-30 bullet in the lever action and having fun. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: This springe
I'd go with the 30-30, but on one of TX hog hunts that 86er used to put on, I saw what a young lady could do with a .243 bolt gun. She shot it in the neck and dropped it in it's tracks. Never been a fan of that cartridge but I was impressed. If I remember right, CRS's son dropped one with a .223 on that trip It's always about shot placement. I shot a sow through both shoulders with a .35WCF as she still managed to get about 80 yds into the brush. I hit her a little high. The one I shot with my .33WCF flipped twice as was DRT.

2ndovec,
Good memory on that hog hunt.
Later, I took son and grandson there and he made two one shot kills with his 7-08. Here are son and grandson showing off:
Good fun and pork!

A preacher i met in west texas uses a Win M94 in 357 with 158gr hp's. I'd use whatever rifle needs to be blooded the most. Todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
