old 94
HI,
I recently aquired an win. 94 circa 1901. The reciever and bands have aged to a brown finish on top of Silver, while the barrel and tube have remained their Black/blue finish.
Is this Browning/yellowing of the receiver something that can/should be removed? How?
Anyone wishing to share their knowledge as to why and what should be done......... I will be using as a shooter, not a collector.
Thanks,
Gary

Re: old 94
Heavens no. The natural patina is very desirable. Altering it in any way would adversely it's value.

Gary, it would be easier to provide a reasoned opinion if you provided photos.

Welcome to the board, Gary - That sounds like it's a great original-condition survivor, and I'd (along with others here) love to own one in that condition.
Is it a Rifle (model) or a Carbine (model), and what's the chambering ?

Re: old 94
Sounds like about 75% of my old Winchesters.
Most all of mine have wear and patina. Treat them just like they were new. Keep them clean and oiled. Especially when you return home from field use. Won't hurt em a bit.
If you're like me, after a while you were prefer rifles like that over the real minty looking ones. I love the look of honest wear on an old Winchester.
Oh, and welcome to the best forum on the web.

Welcome to the forum, I have a couple of old Winchesters that look like that. Like they say, that shows it's battle scars.

Thanks for everyones input. It is a Carbine 30/30. It has a 3 leaf rear folding sight but the middle range blade has a broken wing.
Re: old 94
If that's an original 3 blade Winchester sight they are known for breaking. If you raise/lower blades make sure they move free and keep the pivot lubed. Don't use a screwdriver to pry them up.
Don't do anything to the finish except to take care that it doesn't get worse. What you have is honest wear, the result of many years of use and part of the gun's history.

If it's not rusty and scaling I wouldn't fool with it. Just keep it wiped down with an oily rag.

Re: old 94
Gary, congratulations on owning that fine early carbine.
Re: old 94
That is a beauty.
Leave it just as it is.
Oil it as you would any blued steel firearm.

Gary, your fine shootin' iron is an SRC (Saddle Ring Carbine) - a VERY desirable Winchester !
If you loop/tie a section of leather shoelace through the ring, it will stop scratching the receiver.

Re: old 94
Thanks Pete. Overall it is really good. Except the Stock has a couple of cracks near the tang and some good gouges on the other side of the stock. I had to replace the forearm band and screw as both were stripped. A lot of oil in the wood from over oiling....got most soaked out an re linseed oiled. Picture is after this. It's cheaper owning new guns...lol

Here is the bad side of the stock

I reckon that fine old rifle will be fine to carry deer hunting.

Did Y2K have something to do with the last photo? Seemed to be in his "style".

Doc AJ you are so right, I have always said I would like to get a couple of those old Winchesters and a pot of coffee and sit and listen to the stories.
