Well, close. The original M16 had that thin pencil barrel. If you pulled down on a sling you deflected the flight of the bullet. Heck we weren't even supposed to grasp the forend and pull it in to our shoulder for fear of doing the same. Nope, we laid the forend on the flat of our palm.
When I replaced that thing with a real rifle, an M-14 I learned about slings.

LOL.....In Basic, the only iota of approval I got was on the rifle range. From day one, I was IDed by the Drill Sergeant as the sissy bandsman and couldn't shake it. However, I rarely missed with my rifle, either. The hazing eased up a bit after I had to thrash a couple bubba-types.

Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws "first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.
I shot the M1 Garand at Fort Leonard Wood in 1958. I missed Expert by seven points. I can shut my eyes and still see that target, OH WELL. 79 years old and still shoot iron sights.

Back in the day (we had good vision), I won my first state rifle match with an M-1D (without the scope) from our sniper locker that still had 1903 Springfield Sniper systems in it for training.
My vision is not what it was then, and I now use optics on all my weapons except short range.

Getting old sucks, don't it?

My dad qualified expert in the WV National guard prior to WWII with the 1903A3. When he heard that Gen. Patton said that the M1 Garand was the best battle implement ever made, Dad disagreed. He always thought the 03A3 was better. I have 2 of them, one sporterized and one in stock condition, in honor of dear old dad.

Iron sights ! Is there any other kind
I shall be 70 in a few weeks time so I know how my shooting has deteriorated with my eyesight but as I only shoot for fun I will continue to use iron sights, if I should ever be required to shoot to a much higher standard at longer range then of course I would even go so far as sticking a carrying handle on my rifle...
