Glenfield 30/ Range Report

I've relieved my loser brother in law of a couple of firearms in partial payment of the large amount of money he owes me. One is a junk/ broken Armscorp .22lr, another is a S&W 36 that needs some work, bent ejector rod, missing springs and some other issues but will be worth getting fixed if I can find a decent gunsmith.

The one of interest to me and possible some of you guys is a Marlin / Glenfield Model 30. Differing from the 30A with a 2/3rds magazine and what looks like a walnut stock, though the forend is questionable, looks more like birch but stained to match the butt stock. I can't find much information on the 30, but it doesn't matter really. I'm going to hang on to it in the off chance the 'tard wins the lottery.
It hasn't been taken care of at all, sitting in a plastic case for at least 20 years and I doubt he ever cleaned it. It had some small spots of surface rust but not bad. When I looked down the bore the first time I figured it was a write off, but turned out to be dust and debris from sitting on the floor for who knows how long.
I'll get it out soon for a range trip and will probably put a new receiver sight on it, Should make a good cast bullet shooter.

The mdl 30 is my prefered Marlin because of the forend cap and dovetailed front sight. The 2/3 magazine is another plus. My guess is you'll like it.

I have one that looks like it was drug behind a manure spreader and left for dead.....once cleaned up and the bore scrubbed out I soon found what a gem I had. the true sleeper of the lever gun world.....but I don't know nothing.

Looks like a Marlin version of the Win 64.

That stock design right there is the one that beats my cheek bruised. A friend of mine had the carbine version of that and I soon learned to stick with my Win 94s .
His rear sight elevator was missing too, just like this one. Coincidence?

If it fits you and shoots well, leave it alone and use the heck out of it.

That's what I'm finding as well but this one is definitely not birch. Thirty plus years of carpentry has taught me a few things. May have been replaced somewhere. He's not even sure where he got it. The guy's a lost cause.

The sight elevator is there, just very small. Hence the thoughts for a peep and most likely a taller front sight. I dig the front dove tail too.

Looks like stained birch on both forearm and butt stock, but you came up with a heck of a nice rifle, a gun that would fill many purposes.

Sycamore is often marketed as "Beech". Beech has often been used for military rifle stocks.

Well it's a keeper!

It shoots very nicely with two of my light target loads. The one on the right is a 120 gr lead RN w/ 7gr of Unique and the right target is 8 gr of Unique under a 130 gr LRN bullet. Shoots about 8" high on the lowest elevation with a 170 gr JSP hunting load, that I can't remember the data on right this min.


Hot and humid out there this morning but I had the place to myself. 50 yd targets are the over exposed white blob to the right.


I have a Lyman 66 on the way and I'm going to load up some 170 grain LRN bullets, betting that will cut those groups down considerably. One thing I have to say, this has to be one of the smoothest Marlins I have ever had.

The barrel is 20" with Micro Groove rifling.

The short magazine and lack of barrel bands make the barrel look longer. Seems like it would be a handy sporter.

Yours is cleaner than the one I have,but it has same specs. It is definitely a keeper.
