Savage 99 250-3000
Now that I'm on a roll with imgur, I may as well share pictures of my "birthday present" Savage 99 250-3000.
Over a month ago, I stopped by my parents house while running errands. I'm sitting on the couch talking to my dad when he goes into the other room and I can hear my parents whispering. I could overhear a snippet along the lines of "can we give it to him now".
My mom walks in with a card for me. I open the envelope and it's a birthday card, which was surprising given it was three months before my birthday. Then in walks my dad with an old gun case and hands it to me and says "Happy Birthday".
I unzip the case to find a Model 99 in beautiful condition. This 250-3000 was a closet queen. Looks like its barely been used. Wood isn't scratched, case colors still vivid and unworn on lever. No extra holes drilled, no sling swivels installed. Lyman receiver sight installed and rear sight replaced with a dovetail filler. Lever boss code is 23B which I think means 1950.
My mother says, he just bought the rifle this morning and couldn't wait to give it to you. The story is my dad bought it from one of the "old guys" he has breakfast with. (By "old guys" he means his peers as he's become one of the retired old timers hanging out at the gun club). My dad bought the under the pretense of it being a "birthday present" for me to justify it to my mother.
I am darned lucky to have a dad who is delighted that he was able to find a classic lever gun for me.

Great rifle.
Re: Savage 99 250-3000
Very nice; what a great present1 Love the pre-60 99s. Yes, it dates to 1950 and it is a Model 99EG. The rifling for pre-60 Savage 99 250-3000s was only 1:14, which won't stabize longer .257 bullets. Some will shoot the short Remington Cor-Lokt 100s ok. If you reload, pickup some Speer Hot-Cor 87 grain bullets; they work well in those pre-60 Savage .250-3000s.
Looks like a Lyma 57SA receiver sight. Here is a pic of the instructions for one;

Thanks for the feedback guys and thanks for the reloading and Lyman info. I discovered the quick detach feature and thought it was pretty cool. Granted my bespectacled eyes would shoot better with an optic but I’m going to leave this rifle just the way it is.
So far we’ve only shot it with some Remington factory CoreLokt round noses that were almost as old as the rifle. They grouped “ok”. I’ve got a box of new Hornady ammo and will hope those shoot better. Then it’s onto reloading once I have some brass freed up.
Funny story on dies. Started looking around to hunt up dies. My dad tells me he found a set. New in box set of RCBS dies at that. The funny part: he found them on his own die shelf in his gunroom. And neither he nor I can remember when we got them or where they came from. It’s like the die fairy knew we’d have a 250 Savage some day and left them on the shelf long enough ago that we don’t remember. CRS worked in our favor here.

A very happy birthday indeed, JRD! And with that great Lyman sight -- my very favorite for the 99's. It is slightly sacrilegious but I helped my seeing with the iron sights by replacing the front sight with a fiber-optic (green is my preference).
And you can add the Sierra 90 grain hollow point to the list of game bullets to stabilize in the 14" twist.

I'm glad to see it, Jason - Yer Dad has excellent taste !
My only .250-3000 is a tang-safety Ruger 77R; my Savage 1899-H is a .303 Savage (think: .30-30) - I musta got my wires crossed.

Wow, what a great present! And great parents obviously too!!!
I love my 99 in 250 Savage -- it's the first gun I'd shot a deer with, that I could see the bullet hit the hair I was aiming at... With my .308 (BLR) or 6.5x55 (Mdl 70), I'd always miss it due to recoil. But not so with the .250-3000 -- it is a classic, and underrated, cartridge for sure.
Enjoy!

Great rifle JRD and don't worry that it won't stabilize heavy bullets. The deer will be just as dead when hit with an 87 grain bullet.

My brother in law has a 99 takedown in .250 Savage that he has had since he was a teenager. It was actually given to his father for helping a lady that was stuck in a snow storm.
He always tells me about an article he read in THE AMERICAN RIFLEMAN years ago about some Eskimos that did all their hunting with a .22 LR until they went after bears, then they got out the big .250 Savage.
Congratulations and Happy Birthday!

Congratulations..!!!!
That's a sure 'nuff beauty.
Mine is a 1941 manufacture that my Father bought on the pretense that it would be "Mom's Deer rifle".
That was a standing joke in my family as my Mother was a total East Boston girl, with ZERO interest in Deer hunting.
He got it drilled and tapped for a scope, and that's the way I've used it my whole life.
I've had great luck with Hornady 75 gn HP's, and a variety of 100 gn bullets. Dad went all out back then, as he was prone to do and even got a Lyman(Ideal) .257 HP-GC mold.
I've used that cast bullet a lot too.
The rifle accounted for my first Red Fox, First Groundhog, and First Whitetail.
ENJOY...!!! And thanks for sharing.
