You got us beat, in southwest OH it's 5 with overnight low of -3, tomorrow night's predicted of -6

Still, we're not used to this, these are record lows, and the dogs 'n cats are less than pleased.

Any of that hardy Scandinavian heredity I may have had has diluted over the years.

Looks like by end of week it may get up near freezing...

I bet the trees were cracking like rifle shots, we used to spit in the air & when I could hear, you could hear it crack in mid air

That's pretty wild. I think the coldest I've ever been out it was around -28.

Got up this morning and noticed it was a bit chilly in house while I was making coffee. Went to turn up the furnace and it was set at 64 but reading 57. Rats!

Furnace was running but blowing cold air. After a short rant and a few choice words I remembered that we'd just gotten the propane tank filled. Cracked the gas line and sure enough there was a small air pocket that was keeping the glow plug from igniting. Back up and running before the boss lady even knew what happened. :D

It was 22 below at my daughter's place in Ames, Iowa, this morning. Coldest I've been in was minus 27 in 2013 in eastern Oregon. Not too bad with no breeze and lots of heavy wool.
Barely made it above 40 here, but I guess I'll take it!

I like to bundle up and walk in the woods in this weather (4 below zero earlier today), and take with me a bag of sunflower seed, goat food, and/or popcorn, and just toss a handful here and there where there appears to be some cover.

I imagine some mouse or vole or chipmunk finding the treasure, which to them might be several days' food, and gaining an edge versus the competition. Either that, or just getting spotted by a predator when they are chowing down and becoming food themselves.

I guess I just can't resist "having an impact" on the environment.... :D

It was about 17 degrees above zero here this morning. I do call that cold for the Dallas area. I used to live in Manhattan, Kansas. It hardly ever got more than 10 degrees below zero there.

Friend up near Pulaski NY had -31 temps, having lake effect snow, being a farmer he plows with a tractor. Last he used it he plugged it in to keep some heat in the block. He jumped into the cab and hit the starter, says if the engine made a 1/4 revolution and BANG! Thinks all the connection rods broke from being so cold... somehow plug came out of the wall! He is ready to throw in the towel! $9000.00 engine to replace on a fairly new tractor.

Dang Pitchy, frozen pipes are the pits. I've got one froze in this new house. Cold supply to the upstairs and I can't remember how it's routed. This house is 20 years old now and my memory just ain't that long. It's about -5 this morning and it has been a long time since it was this cold here. I'll have to drag out my old drawings and see if I made an as built of the plumbing. Sounds like a good idea now but back then I probably thought I'd just remember how it all went as I did it all myself. I've already put wood in the stove and Hope took the dogs out. They didn't stay very long. Think I'll make some coffee.

Hope ya find it Ron and no pipe damage.
Got mine thawed already, the pump is in a little room in the entry way and sits down in a hole about six foot square.
It`s freezing where the line comes out of the pleasure tank, never froze there in past years so I`m wondering if those ******* ground hogs didn`t dig a hole into that area and cold air is getting in.
Going to fill that area with insulation and see if that fixes the issue for now.
Otherwise I`d have to tear up part of the porch floor looking for tunnels.
If that`s what happened there`s going to be some dead ground hogs come spring.

GunnyMack what I`ve seen with tractors is if they aren't used a lot and warmed up good in the summer condensation will put water in the oil in various places and the water pools in the lowest areas and then freeze in the winter.
On my JD`s I always crack all the drain plugs and let the water drain.
Jay and everyone stay safe and hope there aren`t to many problems.

Thanks buddy! 23 below this morning but so far so good.
Sounds like you are keeping on top of your freezing, at least. Thats the name of the game.
I agree with the engines. When you run em in the cold, run em long enough to dry out. Moisture kills.

Shoot those whistle pigs Pitchy!
Shame of it is that tractor is fairly new. It's inside a barn and WAS plugged in...but as you say, water can and does cause issues.
After you put some insulation around, stick a lamp ( or hair dryer) in there if it'll fit and leave it on, that extra heat should help, but at the temps you have you might just have to deal with it!

Sure glad for this Arkansaw weather, the last 4 nites it has only been 6 and 7 degrees none of that minus zero stuff. We had some snow the day before Christmas for about 15 minutes. The deer have sure been eating the corn I put out. Three bucks yesterday and two today, lots of does and fawns all the time.

We've been below zero every night for a week or so here in central Maine.

Minus 21 last Friday.

Minus 38 is cold, though. Glad ya got your water fixed, Pitchy.

I have a Monitor heater in the house as well as a wood stove.
The kerosene tank is outside, 'cuz like Pitchy, I've got no basement.
Some water got into the kero, settled to the bottom, and froze the
outlet. No heat from the Monitor. Pull the filter, take a torch to the
outlet and bottom of the tank, drain a quart of fluid. Repeat for a
week or so. That was two weeks ago. One advantage of the brutally
cold temps is NO (liquid!) water in the kero! We'll have to repeat the
procedure during the next thaw.

Blizzard tomorrow at the coast, and maybe inland a bit depending on the
storm track. -20F or worse predicted for the weekend. I'll be making some
soup and chili!

Stay warm, everybody! :D

I would think the starter bendix or a tooth on the flywheel broke. Con Rods are pretty tough. Hope its just the bendix, that would be the easiest fix. Just check for pieces in the flywheel/clutch area.

-14° here on Monday. Been warming up with 40° for a high and possibly 50° over the weekend!
Lows last night were the high teens.

Glad you got your pipe issue solved, Lenn!
They said its gonna warm up a bit here too. It was only a few degrees below this morning.......but we got a blizzard going now so not sure which is worse.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Pitchy, where are you located? Can't be too far from me. I read that Embarrass was the coldest in the lower 48 this morning, -44.

I was told the reason it has been so cold in Minnesota lately is that the Vikings might be headed to the Superbowl, so hell must be freezing over. 5th time is the charm!

Today and tommorrow are the last two days of the Virginia gun deer season . We're supposed to be down in single digits at sunrise both days ! I will endure , this morning I'll hunt by myself at my house in the morning and evening . Saturday I'll go hunt with friends in another county we'll sit a couple hours at first light , then do man drives until lunch . After lunch we may do more man drives or turn a friends beagles loose for rabbits . I've never beagled for rabbits , that could be cool 😉👍🏻 Regardless the last day is more about the social aspect rather then the killing 😉👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Incidentally yesterday afternoon I got around to skinning and cutting up the deer I killed New Years Day afternoon . Took me awhile to get the hide off then I carried the carcass in the house laid it on the kitchen counter and let it thaw THREE HOURS before I could cut it up in a decent fashion 😳🙄
