My local shop has a rack of "junkers" out of the public view and I found this 1949 39A waiting to be rescued. The previous owner had varnished over the wood AND buttplate, spray painted over the metal with Black automotive paint (they didn't even remove the inner mag tube or mask the wood & sights), and replaced the "bullseye" with a screw. The positive points were the age, the vintage steel Lyman 66MC, the Merit aperture, Lyman 17A front Globe and the early production.
