I said the same thing about .32 Mag, too....
A .357/.38sp would be so much better, cheaper and flexible from >100 grain plinkers to 180 grain for big game at sensible ranges. Better availability of store-bought if need be and a greater variety of components if you roll your own.
This opinion does not take into consideration the "heck with it, I WANT one" argument.

I kinda get it for small game and varminting. Then again, an accurate 38/357 isn't that hard to come by and should do great. IMO coyote and beaver are about as large as you should take with a 30-32 pistol cartridge, captive livestock excepted.

I have a .327 revolver. Why?
Because I have yet to find a .32-20 revolver that can take HV loads.
Eventually...
If you were out walking around in the woods, would you shoot it w/o ear protection? A nice, gentle, sort of quiet 158 grain .357 popping out +/- at 700 fps would do just as well.

I know....I fired a .357 Magnum at a grouse once. .444 or 45-70 hot rounds are even worse.

You could ask the same question about 2/3rds of the cartridges out there. What can the .41 mag do that the .44 Magnum won't? Not a thing.
Sometimes it comes down to "why not?". I have them both and enjoy shooting them both. The cool thing about the .327 is that will also shoot Shorts and Longs and even .32 ACP if you want a bit of a challenge. Plus I had a pile of .32 H&R components that needed something to do. It's also possible with the .32s to cram six rounds into a cylinder/ frame that would only take 5 .38/.357s.
But it all comes down to "Because I wanted it".

Im with you Blaine, do have a nifty little 32 H&R but it mostly just lays around, 38 - 357 fills most of my needs
That said after my encounter with the mad bull & my 38 I did fell a lot better carrying a heavy loaded 45 colt revolver

Ruger made a 32nag/32-20 convertable, the Buckeye guns, that would take HV loads and then some.

My 1917 Winchester 1892 32-20 really likes some loads that are more than equal to the old " HV" loads that I could buy when I was young. But if you want a new rifle in a new round, get it.

I have one of the Ruger Buckeye 32-20 Blackhawk's , it is like a small German Panzer tank gun. I often wonder no matter what powder could this beast blow up? .
I'd like a rifle in that clambering as a "32-20 with tougher brass and a wider margin of strength/safety", but the only reason I'd want a pistol in it would be as a companion-gun for the rifle.
Now I'd love an SP-101 in 32-20 just as much, since that power level would be all I'd want without hearing protection.
I do think of a 38 Special vs a 327 as a 'fatter, slower' rpund, and with a CCW handgun that seems to be better (more effective, easier to shoot well), and spares the ears better.
.....of course if going from 0.327" to 0.357" has those advantages, then if you start with a 0.357" maybe you should go to 0.375"....or 0.429"....check give me a 500 S&W with 'cowboy' loads....

When I was a kid, a friend with essentially the same gun (30 Carbine Blackhawk) was loading on-the-fly with a hand-tool, and I don't know the powder, or charge, but he later realized it was a 30-06 load (probably a pistol powder load for the 110 gr Speed Half-jackets they used to make). The primer was GONE, the pocket was doubled in size with the brass head so expanded it looked like a trumpet, but otherwise the only sign was it was even MORE deafening than usual (to this day even with 30 Carbine ball ammo I Think it is the loudest gun I've ever fired).

My mistake. I meant to type "Double-Action" revolver. MY .327 is an SP101 and I'd love to have a .32-20 cylinder made, but I'm not sure if the frame is long enough.
I wouldn't mind a Blackhawk convertible, but I've yet to see one in person.

Somebody wake me up when Smith and Wesson puts out a full lug L-frame DA in 32-20. I always wanted a Model 16 but when contemplating the cost versus the decidedly non-magnum performance of the .32 H&R Magnum, I would instantly cool to the idea.
I settled on a Model 648 ... in 22 Mag. It lays in my safe loaded with CCI shotshells. I've killed exactly one critter with it in the last 23 years ...

Because you just fall into things. My first 32 was a H&R with a swing out cylinder in 32 long. $75 in my pocket got the gun. Then I realized how handy it was. Carried it all the time in the woods. I got a Taurus 357 and it wasn't as handy. The 357 went down the road. Then I got a baby Vaquero in 32 H&R. That became my woods gun. But eye sight required better sights so now I have a single 7. I just like the handiness of the size.
I keep woods and plinking loads subsonic using 115 gr bullets. Also a pound of powder goes a long ways. For hot loads I have a 327 Blackhawk, these loads are very loud, earmuffs manditory. Of course being on the 32 train I have a Marlin in 32-20 and a S&W also. I just keep falling into them.
I guess as long as I have a Single Six with mag cyl, and a 9422 mag, I've got the gap between .22lr and 38/357 filled up. I guess one of those little 16" Iron Henrys in .327 might be handy. I looked up the numbers on those .327s and it's a real firecracker.

For one thing the 32's are one of those calibers that are inherently accurate. I am currently using a 123 year old Win 92 in 32-20 for the NRA's Pistol cal lever action silhouette game. Reloading for 32-20 I lose about 3% brass. The 357/38 guns are popular but the 32's tend to shoot a bit flatter. For the game that is important. With targets at 40, 50, 75 and 100 meters flatter requires less sight adjusting. I'm hoping this forward heavy HRA will allow me to load a bit hotter than the 32-20 in the old win. so it shoots flatter and I can retire the Win.
PillHer likes her SP101 in .327, and she is more accurate with it than with any other pistol she has ever used. Flat nose lead bullets over a tiny charge of powder and a very mild kick. Whether it would kill a deer or not is something that remains to be seen, but it should be do fine on coyotes and smaller.

I liked Skeeter Skelton's magazine article on the 32 H&R Magnum Single Six years ago in SHOOTING TIMES. I thought that it was a good idea. Elmer Keith also spoke well of the 32 caliber handguns.
Ruger/Lipseys Single-Seven .327 Federal Magnum intrigued me as the best platform for the cartridge. This past January found a LGS with a 5 1/2" specimen in the display case, which I promptly purchased. I was able to get RCBS carbide dies, brass and bullets from my local Fin, Feather and Fur store.
.22 sized frame handgun with near .357 Magnum power and the ability to shoot .32 ACP, .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum. Light recoil and easy to manage size. Shoots flat with my 117gr gas check RNFP and 12.5 grs WW-296 in .327 Mag. with no leading. I have just begun to explore the reloading possibilities.
