is a good day!! Hosted on Fotki
I bought this .300 Savage Model 99 about fifteen years ago and just never got around to shooting it.
It came home about dirt cheap because everybody knows that a .300 Savage just ain't no good compared to a .308 Winchester. And besides, someone inletted a little magnetic compass into the top of the buttstock.

There are four shots in this roughly 1/2" group.
I got 5 pounds of free, 15 year - old 3031 powder from a fellow who was afraid that it was too old to use ( grin ). The brass was re-formed .308 Winchester Federal range pickkups, and the bullets were left over from some long forgotten trade.
I probably could have shot a smaller group with newer components and one of them new-fangled plastic guns.
Such a beautiful rifle. I've always liked those with that little schnabble fore-arm. Is it an F? And forgive me for being pessimistic but I doubt that you could improve on that group with newer stuff. That is certainly good enough most any purpose. What does the 300 give up to the 308? About 100 fps? I need to find me another in 250.

... What took you so long to try er out?...
I'm getting better at setting priorities in my old age.
There was a time when a full time job, a part time job. a family, and the pursuit of a college degree, simultaneously, was a distraction from shooting.
I'd trade it in for a synthetic stocked stainless bolt-action (way more accurate), with an illuminated-reticle scope, chambered in 300 Blackout. You'd kill far more deer, and it would be way more powerful and accurate.
. . . . or . . . .
....maybe have it re-bored to 300 WSM, which would be a way more efficient cartridge.
Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws "first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.
On the flip side there are those who either were distracted by other guns and life who now wish they had a 300 Savage- ask me how I know!Beautiful rifle.
Anybody knows that "A bad day of shooting is ALWAYS better than a good day at work!"
The 99 is the best of the lever guns in it's day. It will be hard to improve on that grouping!

Hard indead! I fired several more groups and tried for five rounds in a group.
Several times I would have four rounds in about 1/2" and the fifth shot would open the group another 1/4".
Still not too shabby for a 68 year old levergun.
BTW, I checked on the Savage Forum and it appears that mine was made in 1949, the year after I was hatched.
