Marlin 1895 CB 45-70 JM Stamped

I have a Marlin 1894 SS .44 Mag. JM Stamped that I really don't shoot much. I have been wanting a 1886 variant in 45-70 but a local guy has a 1895 CB 45-70 with 26" barrel and William Peep Sight.

We are thinking about doing an even swap.

Those who have experience with the Marlin 1895 CB in this caliber, what are your thoughts on the rifle?

Well, I decided against it. While I am sure it is a nice rifle and shoots great the 1894 SS Marlin .44mag holds a higher value and he just didn't want to give any boot.

Wow...tough choice. The 1894 is lighter and handier, but that 1895CB is a dandy, too.....FWIW, I had a CB and let it go, but still, have the 1894...an older micro groove with bluing...

Just my 2 cents, I love my cowboy 45-70, it`s light and dependable and the rifle I grab when heading to the woods.

Thanks for the info guys. I really like both. I have a couple Winchester 94 rifles in .44 and don't own a 45-70 at the moment and would love too. The 1886 is high atop my bucket list. I'd love one of that model in 45-70. The Marlin 1895 is a gun that I had in the standard button mag configuration a few years ago. I like the way the cowboy model looks better than the short magazine version.

I almost traded him till I seen what mine was selling for verses his. It was just too much of a loss for me at this time. Even though I'd be happier with h his rifle.

if...IF this is an original Marlin COWBOY rifle D&T on the left side of the frame for receiver sights it has a Badger BBL and it worth a damnsite more than ANY Marlin 44MAG 1894 carbine.

It's a JM stamped 1895 CB. Now sure how to tell if it's Badger barrel or not. Care to enlighten me?

I pulled up the last few sold gun broker auctions for the 1894 and the last three were over 1,100

The last few 1895CB 26" barrel 45-70s were in the 600-700 range. That's all I had to go by.

That one I sold you had a tang sight, unless you switched over to the other....

Hey there Blaine -- Yes indeed, but now it is equipped with a Montana Vintage Arms tang sight base and usually wears a #107 staff when I want to reach out a little further. I use the rifle for silhouette and the receiver sight works well. Here is one of the prizes it's won along the way!

I'd take the 45-70 Cowboy any day over the 44 mag carbine. I've shot both, and the 45-70 can do anything the .44 can do, and a darn site more. Here on the West Coast, a JM 45-70 Cowboy is near impossible to find under the 1100 dollar mark as they are snapped up by silhouette and cowboy action shooters. I use mine for the Cowboy Silhouette game and love it - in fact, posted this to the August Offhand Postal Match stickied up top of the forums a few days ago...
