45-70 and Alliant 2400
Thinking about loading up some Oregon Trail 350gr RNFP.
Anyone have any published loads for this bullet weight and powder?

Not specifically (IIRC)
But I DO have a load for the Gould 320, which is 21gr for 1293fps or 28gr @ 1640fps.
max I show (ased on a Ruger #1 action) is 34.5 @ 1958 fps...

Thanks everyone. I think I'll run 25gr to start and see where that gets me. Also, has anyone done up their 2400 loads using a large pistol primer. These should be pretty low pressure loads compared to my 44mag so I dont think itll be a problem. Is this correct, or is a large rifle necessary?

I'd use a large rifle primer. Its a messy powder as it is & I gotta think a pistol primer may make it worse. Could be wrong tho because I tried LRM primers & it got no better.meanc wrote:Thanks everyone. I think I'll run 25gr to start and see where that gets me. You should be aware too the large pistol primers are shorter than large rifle. Probably not enough to matter but that I cant say.

I would work up the load using a Magnum large rifle powder, 2400 likes lots of ignition. I always used a magnum primer when I used 2400 in pistol reloading.

Large Rifle it is then.
I'm also thinking hard about that 400gr bullet and 25gr 2400.
It may not be a "magnum" type load, but I figure being able to use 2400 (a powder I have plenty of) for pushing such a big hunk of lead at a decent velocity, makes it just different enough from my 45colt/44mag loads (and more economical) to make reloading for it worth while. I'm certain my brass may last a few loads longer.
Thanks again for all thehelpful input.
