Henry 44 Cast Bullet Day

Post by Wildgoose »

Got out to the range to try out my NOE cast bullets. The mold is a two cavity that casts both plain base and gas check slugs. I just went with wheel weights to start with and kept the loads down to starting levels. I really don't want to mess with heat treating or mixing up harder cast alloy if its not needed. They shot pretty good at 100 yards, at least capable of groups as good as I can shoot with the factory sights. At some point here I think its time to get a scope mount for the rifle and see how that goes.
I did retry the Missouri Cast Bullets I had on hand with 2400 instead of H110 and there was some improvement especially with the 240 grainers. Good enough to do the job out of the deer stand down in the creek bottom where the shots are not over 100 yards. The 300 grain MB are still a bit marginal but are OK. I don't really plan on buying any more "ready made" cast bullets anyway as the mold has worked out and I have plenty of lead on hand. :)

That is as good ,or better, than I can do with factory irons at 100 yd. with any rifle.
Now , with a diopter type peep sight, i would expect that same rifle/ load combination to stay under 2".
All in all, good shootin !

I am satisfied with it. It functions well and is as accurate as one would have expected it to be. All in all a good buy among the levers on the market today. I didn't encounter any issues that I would have wanted to send it back for or discovered any major flaws.
