Killed a Bear with my old .32 Spl.
This past Saturday was the opening day for PA. Black Bear season, got into the woods a little later then I wanted to around 7am,got to my spot where I usually sit for Deer season right off I saw a spike buck and a doe, then nothing for about 6 hours, then I heard some movement to my left at about 15 yards it was a very nice buck he stopped and was like a statue he was froze looking across the hollow then I heard some movement coming from across the hollow figuring it it was some more deer coming so I turned to look straight ahead and here she comes!.
I have been hunting for Black Bear for 45 years and have never even seen one during Bear Season.
So the Bear was just walking through the wood heading towards me at 80 yards I get her in my 4x scope and there were to many twigs in the line of fire then she turns right still walking at a slow but steady pace up the ridge on the far side of the hollow still following her in my scope she walks into a clearing and I pulled the trigger.
I'll be honest when I pulled the trigger I was shaking pretty bad,I was aiming for her neck,so I pulled the trigger and she went down on the spot like a piano fell on her, she didn't even flinch, didn't move nothing, dead on the spot.
So I stood there for about 15 minutes in amazement that I just killed a Bear with my old 1960 336 SC. 32 Spl.
Ammo was plane old Remington 170's.
It was an 85 yard shot I checked it with my range finder before I headed over to the bear.
So never let anyone tell you a .32 Spl. isn't enough gun to kill a Black Bear.
The bullet entered the base of the left side of her neck and excited through her right shoulder.
That night I took her to the PA Game Comm. weigh station and she was 255 lbs. dressed.
I know it's not the biggest Bear in the woods but I'm really proud of that old Marlin .32 Spl
I couldn't get the picture to post but if you click on the link below you can see it.

Outstanding. (I've never seen a bear in Washington, with or without a tag )

Congrats. I have seen only one bear during hunting season in my life time also. Got to make the most of the moment. Enjoy

Blaine: speaking of bears, we had a small one in the yard about 2-3 years ago. Surprised me as it was about mid-day when it was walking round the yard. Saw another one on the east gate road on Ft. Lewis and once one crossed the road on 8th Ave. So around the big landing/training field on Ft. Lewis. Bears are out there, but are hard to spot.

FANTASTIC with a capital "F"!!!!
I used my 1906 Model 94 in 32 Special with a lead bullet to shoot my deer last year. Way too much fun!
Tried it again this year with a model 92 but nothing worth shooting showed up.
Just great being out in the woods with these old shoot'n irons!
Congratulations!

Congratulation!
I own an old winchester 1894, 1907 vintage, in the same caliber.
Considering your brilliant demonstration, I will certainly regard my winchester with a greater respect!
Buldo.

SWEET! Bears I saw taken this Saturday were smaller than yours. It was a lousy day to hunt. Love it when old timey lever guns gets bears.

Really nice job on the bear. And that SC style is just about my favorite Marlin configuration (right behind the old 336A).

Mossyoak1957 the bear may only 255 pounds but it looks pretty big next to you.
I have two old Marlins in 32 Spl. but I have not shot any game with either one.
I am sitting hear excited for you. 45 years and BAM, what a great feeling you must of had.
Great shot and what a quick tracking job!

congratulations on a very nice bear. Love that old Marlin too!
Re: Killed a Bear with my old .32 Spl.
Congratulations. Well done, and with a good old caliber to boot. Lots of old stories about that round getting the job done without fuss or extra noise. Just like it's smaller brother the 30-30.

Re: Killed a Bear with my old .32 Spl.
That .32 Special is no slouch. I used my 1949 era Marlin 336A-DL on a mule deer last year. One shot at an estimated 140 yards.
May use it on a whitetail spike this year.
That bear does look bigger than you said it weighed in the picture.

Ballistics haven't changed, nor have bears; just marketing hype. The 'old' cartridges still do fine.

Awesome job! Sounds like a perfect day in the woods.
Re: Killed a Bear with my old .32 Spl.
Once when we were visiting my uncle I saw his Winchester 94 on his rack and I said wow you have a rifle just like Dad's. He went on to explain to me that my Dad's rifle was a .30-30 which was a deer rifle, his was a .32 and that was for bear. Some folks consider that a myth but it's out there none the less.
