Was over at the Winchester website to download some firearm manuals.I did a search of the Trophy pictures for the 94 and discovered these postings from 21st century hunters using 94's chambered in 30-30 for large game.First some from Romania.(I thought the roebuck was cute)

"Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."
Must be some sort of hoax.... Surely, the good folks there know as well as anyone that the old 30WCF in such an antiquated design is of no use for actual taking of game; else why would they have ceased promoting it's use and usefulness?

There is a fine line between hobby & obsession! AND... I'm over it!!
No I ain't ready, but let's do it anyway!
Surely nobody seriously regards the 30-30 as a suitable gun for bison, especially not the size animal in that pic with the woman ( its head is bigger than she is ). As for zebra and warthog, why not, their no bigger than pigs and horses.

I'm not buying it.
They must not be "SERIOUS OUTDOORMAN".
Why I just read in a mag that the 35 Rem is the bare min for feral hog and that the 45-70 thru 325WSM with top of the line bullets is what is needed for these terrible animals. [/b]

That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.
I have no doubts about it killing any of the animals, with the right placement, but those rounds on that rifle STILL look awful big.
And for the Buff, for me it would be a head shot only affair. No a Zebra isn't armor plated, but I've read quite a few articles of them absorbing a lot of lead. They're deceptively tough animals.
Interesting thread. I agree that the zebra pic is no .30-30.
I am just taking this thread with a grain of salt. I am not saying it's not true, and I not sure it is true. But the .30-30 has taken a lot of game over the years, you can't cut it short.
The 30 WCF ( 30-30 ) has taken ever thing that walks on the North American continent since 1895.
The problem is, it's a short to mid range hunters rifle. If you can judge your range, stalk within your limits, and put the bullet where it's supposed to go, it will work most every time.
Magnumitus started not long after smokeless powder was invented and we haven't heard the last of it yet.
I'm glad to see this thread. It gets down to the nitty gritty, the 30-30 just flat out works.

The 94 was certainly chambered for larger cartridges. But the receiver had a noticeable thick area to handle the power of 375, 307, 356, and 444. I'm not seeing this at all in the photo which leads me to the conclusion that 30-30 toppled this zebra.

seems odd that a .300wcf mag is considered adequit to shoot a brown bear at 250 yds, but, the 30-30 at 50 yds. isnot. a 170grain bullet at 2000fps. should penetrate and destroy vital organs, same as a 180, .300 at 250yds. winchester promoted the 30wcf. as a grizzly cartridge when it first was introduced. 30-30 can do it all in north america, if u can shoot and respect range limimtations.
Those aren't .30-30s... those are 7.62x51R Magnums.

And here I am just after reading a gun magazine thinking that deer won't even notice it, much less die, if shot with anything less powerful than a 7mm Mag. Some writer in Texas Fish and Game magazine a few years ago said that he wouldn't even consider hunting elk with less than a .338 Mag. These pictures have got to be figments of my imagination.

This was one of my largest mulies. Estimated live weight: 275 lbs. It was taken after a long stalk in rough country with my older Glenfield. One shot through chest at about 125 yards or so. It was cut into pieces to pack out.
30-30 is a keeper !!

Is this the picture?

There are lots of nice rifles out there, but to me, there is nothing that is more perfect looking, nor anything more perfect in form and function, than a Winchester Model 94.

I was just reading this thread and was surprised to see myself this morning. For lack of space, I've hung the antlers from this bull upside down over the top of the door to my reloading room. They frame the door perfectly and remind me of my good fortune last September.
I've also got a Winchester model 64 in 25-35 and another 1894 in 32 Win Special. I'm thinking about trying one of those on this year's moose hunt. Although, the 30 WCF seems to be the lucky one. In the past, I've shot two bull moose with a Win 1886 in 45-90, two with a Win 1895 in 405 Win. and two with a Win 1895 in 35 Win. They all worked very well except for the 405 with some DKT brand bullets (this was before Hornady ressurected the caliber and appropriate bullets were hard to find). Those DKTs came apart on a chest shot and would not penetrate to the far lung. That bull was in close cover and tried to gore me after I shot him. I was saved by my own clumsiness as I beat feet in reverse while firing a quick shot. I tripped and the bull ran over my legs when I was down but never stepped on me. It took NINE more shots to put him on the ground. A subsequent bull shot all on one side of the chest showed how the bullets lacked penetration. I've got a left over stash of DKTs that are only good for paper punching or ground squirrels in my opinion. Live and learn.

Question . Do folks eat Zebra ? I know some eat horse in other countries. I have some holsters made of horse hide , Don't know who eat the meat. Maybe shipped outside the U.S.

Nice pictures. I guess they know how to control wolves in Romania. As far as African game is concerned I want to say that the usual custom is that the natives get the meat and you get the trophy.
Heres some of me acanned from old photo's. The big red is the one I have told about that came looking for me!
The other is a little roe doe taken with my first 94 trapper. The red was taken with the same round but from a Marlin336.
