I didn't want to drill any holes in my gun. There are factory holes for the Receiver Sight. However, I may change my mind some day because the Williams does detract from the receiver's looks.
What you did is certainly the best way to go to not diminish the rifle's value. I agree that it doesn't look as beautiful as the rifle but they do work well.
game keeper: The 71, especially in the carbine has a pretty good bark to it. I wouldn't want a tang sight on it even if one did fit without alterations. I have tang sights on most of my rifles but not on the ones that are heavy kickers. I started with a tang on my EL but with heavy hunting loads, my glasses (and eye right behind it) were in too much jeopardy.
Leverluver, Good point I've never fired a 71 carbine or rifle so I didn't know about how much they kicked. Anyway the rifle is for hunting more than looking at!
