Veteran's ID card?

There was some discussion a while back about a Veteran's ID Card, to prove that a person is in fact a veteran. Not a VA card, just a Veteran's ID Card.

What was the upshot of that conversation, is there such a thing or not?

I have a picture vet ID card.
Got it free when I registered my DD 214 with the city I live in.
I have yet to have to show it or need it for anything.

Since I don't use the VA I have nothing. But I haven't really needed anything.

My Arkansas drivers license says VETERAN across the bottom.

My state offers either a veteran's photo ID card, or a veteran's driver's license - all that's req'd is a simple form to fill out (easily filled out online & downloaded/printed) and take to the DMV with a DD214.

I know the fed know where most of the vets are already. But, I don't see any reason to make it easier for them to find us. Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid, but the last thing a repressive government would want is a bunch of armed combat vets resisting being repressed.

And any way you look at it our government has become more repressive over the years. But, it's all for our own good.

Texas allows exemption from property taxes for veterans with 60% or greater service related disabilities. Free driver's licenses, hunting licenses for vets with 60% or greater disabilities, and educations benefits for all vets. There are also special rates and qualifying criteria for land or home loans & home improvement loans. License plates include disabled vets, former prisoner of war, and certain medal recipients. A waiver for TX toll roads are also offered.

Didn't know most of this until I looked it up... even a free plate for Viet Nam Veterans, registration fees still apply.

Home Depot (and I think also Lowe's) has a veteran's discount. Friend of mine had the same question as you pose, jn. He buys a fair amount of stuff from Home Depot when he has a construction contract and thought that discount might be nice. All we came up with for an easy-carry-in-the-wallet idea was the VA medical card, but when he went to get one they wanted a bunch of financial info as though he was trying to get into the VA hospital, when all he wanted was an easy way to prove he is a vet. I don't think he ever followed through.

I suggested he just take along a DD214 when he shopped and I think that's what he decided on.

I've tried a couple times trying to get a vet id card - just a card identifying me as a vet - but they (VA) refuse saying I make too much money to qualify
for benefits. I don't want benefits just an id card. They won't budge.
Lowe's requires a bunch of hoops, Home Depot my 214.

Hrumph ! That reminds me of the time I went to Super Cuts (a national hair-cutting chain), but left as soon as they asked for my SSN, when I checked in to the greeting desk upon arrival for a $8 haircut.

Lowes out in AZ, or at least Phoenix is really cracking down. Last few visits they only gave the discount to active military. Needless to say, Home Depot get the majority of my business now.
I have 'veteran' on the DL via DD214. Looked into a VA ID and for me, at least, it really doesn't get me anywhere.

Smartest thing I ever did was keep my old (and thus expired) military ID tho. Still carries a lot of weight.

Well I'll be danged. That's good info, Paladin. I've lived in this state over 50 years and didn't know they would put "vet" on the DL. Although I can't think of when I ever needed to show I was a vet since I don't do enough business at Home Depot to make any difference. I'll let my friend Butch know about the DL thing, though.
