Winchester 71

Post by dtrice »

I just got an original Winchester 71 and I'm wanting to put a peep sight on it. What sights would you recommend? I'm also curious if the original Winchesters and the various reissues used the same screw patterns on their receivers.

Congrats on your new rifle. Would it be possible to post a pic of the rear left side of the receiver? Some were drilled and tapped for receiver peep sights. I installed a Williams
Foolproof on my Browning 86 SRC. The same sight is made for the 71 or 86.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

Sure, I'm a little technically illiterate but I'll take some pictures tonight.

I believe the hole patterns are the same. Sights meant for 94's work I think, but the slide is a little narrower, which doesnt seem to hurt. If you want it to look period correct, a Lyman number 56 rear is one that the factory often used. I think they look much better than any of the newer sights. Failing that, a steel number 66, or modern alloy number 66 would look more period for the gun, though the Williams sights function fine, just not as nice looking or match the gun as well.

I've used Lyman 56's on several rifles, and the exact model doesnt seem to hurt as long as its for a flat side Winchester, or so my experience has been. One, I bought from a guy that was lamenting that it wasnt the right model for his gun. I bought it and it worked fine on mine of the same model as his.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

.

Of course, the cat's meow would be to have a bolt peep sight installed.

AFAIK, a repro's still available through Montana Vintage Arms (with or w/o installation) and/or Frontier Americana ( Fargo, ND - 741-241-4440) - but the bolt machining costs as much as the sight.

This website claims to be an exclusive dealer for the repro 98a/98b bolt peep sight: http://oldgunsights.com/About.html

I forgot about the Lymans. The old Winchester 98a peeps I've found are pretty pricey.

I have one that was factory installed in the early 50's it is a Lyman 56. I think that might have been standard.
It works really sweet. I don't know what they cost now, but would fit the gun nicely.
