Help needed with a Uberti 1873

Post by Borregos »

I picked up a Uberti 1873 in 357Mag on Friday and it needs a real good cleaning.
I need to remove the magazine tube, I assume I have to drift out the small pin pictured below? Just wanted to make sure before I did anything.
Thanks

Pete, there are a lot of old 73s that never have had their mag tubes dismounted. Arte you sure you want to do this?

Scott, the reason I want to remove it is to check the state of the barrel under the forend, there is some light freckling on the metal work and I was a bit concerned it may have been wet at sometime so would like to clean it up.

Yes, that pin must be removed. There will be a notch in the mag tube it sits in. Then watch that magazine cap... the spring will fling it someplace very hard to find! Be careful with the forend cap screws, they are quite small and easily misplaced.

A word of caution drifting that pin out. Your best bet is to clamp the hanger and barrel left side up in a padded vise to support the hanger in the dovetail. That dovetail is a twist in design and if you beat it up it gets real loose real fast. Drift it out from the left to the right and go back just the opsosite. Also, grease the tube where is pulls though the hanger. This will help keep the scratches to a minimum. Don't try to remove the tube until the forend cap is unscrewed and loose, too.
