I believe he said that it was going to be brutally difficult for him to get online for a while once he was packed up. My best guess is if he posts soon it will be from a library or internet cafe.

Are there internet cafe's in this country ?

I've not seen or heard of one around where I live here in VA . I've seen and used a bunch of them in the Philippines but not here .

Seems like every place has WiFi these days. Buy a coffee at StarSucks and you can surf/use the net for a couple hours.

Technically you don't even have to buy anything. Sitting in the parking lot should net you a good signal. Not that I would do such a thing!

Most Libraries have free internet, and WiFi is usually part of the service.

I got a call - he's in Ft. Wayne at the new place, so that's good. We'll see if we can get him some help on that end now.

My definition of an Internet cafe is a place you go in that has numerous PC's there and you rent them by the hour . This is pretty common place in the Philippines and Thailand .

Heck, I do it all the time. I've got this wonderful app that tells me when a good WiFi signal is around. When I need to get on line I'll hunt one up and go for it. Also, if I'm doing work from my laptop it's generally faster than using the hotspot on my phone.

Here's one for you. The City of Los Angeles, yea the one that's so deep in debt they'll never pay it off, wants free wifi city wide for the masses. I bet someone gets reelected on this one, even if it never happens.

Joe is used to dial up (!), he won't know what hit him when he connects to a fast pipe. He'll love it.

There was a coffeeshop in Torrington that had a couple of PCs for use (for paying customers) as well as Free WiFi (with code) for paying customers.

With most everyone having a "device" in the US, WiFi makes most sense. But AFAIK Joe doesn't have a "device", just a boxed up box.

That is a picture of a Fiber Optic splice, unless there is something I'm not seeing?? It doesn't look like a HOTSPOT to me.

Not sure Steve, I see two boxes there, one gray one black. The Time Warner guys told me there is one out there and it registers on my phone. I do not know what it would look like.

Yep, that's one reason I like TW.

Joe got his stuff to Indiana, but unfortunately the cell phone number I passed along for helpers to get hold of him in Illinois to help with the moving out of Illinois was evidently the wrong one to call once they were in Indiana, and by the time I found that out the weekend helpers had all gone on to other projects. The good news is some other folks showed up to help, and he got his truck empty.

He's now in a VERY 'gun-friendly' state. Possibly one of the most dramatic shifts in laws across one state border is between Illinois and Indiana.

Amazing how many non-gun-owners are oblivious to differences like that; they have no clue there is any difference between the two states vs. the number of cornfields or golf courses...

Yes, Pretty neat how they are put out there, we don't have them hear in NY. I am thinking they are running power on their co-axial, with the fiber overlashed.
The power thing would be a no go here, safety regulations, unless the transformer is mounted on the pole and power is only going out a few feet to the modem/HotSpot.

It's one of the very few good service TW provides, their TV is horrible and they were just ranked as the worst company in the US. Fiber optic to the house is the best service you can have, but it's expensive and it takes time to build out. I would love to have Fiber Optic service, my provider is putting it up in town, so it will just be a matter of time to get out here to me in the woods.
