Correcting an error

Post by Ysabel Kid »

The Christmas before last I had some money in my pocket when I walked into an Academy Sports near where I live. Mistake! They had a Chiappa "Citadel M1-22" rifle on sale for a bit over a couple of c-notes. I've always liked the M1-Carbine, and having one purpose-made for the .22LR cartridge, despite the difficulty getting those fun little rounds, seemed like a good idea.

Only problem was that it had a block polymer stock. Yuk.

Bought it and brought it home and got that reaction from Y2K - double-yuk! Nothing wrong with black polymer, but it simply doesn't look right on the M1-Carbine.

It has been driving me nuts for well over a year. I finally got around to calling Legacy Sports (the importer), and the cost for a replacement wood stock set (stock and hand-guard) was almost as much as I paid for the whole darn gun!

I figured I just needed to live with it and be patient. My patience paid off!

A few weeks back CDNN ran a sale on a wood stock replacement set for the M1 Carbine. It was less than half as much as what Legacy Sports wanted. I figured I could alter it to fit, having read that several parts were interchangeable between the two firearms.

Well, here are the results. The stock was almost a perfect fit without any alteration! All I did was sand the hand-guard where the barrel band covers it. Everything else dropped in.

I think it looks a lot better. What say ye?

Looks good. Some guns just deserve wood. However I do have a Swedish 96 in a plastic stock that looks like wood, that most can't tell its not. I'd like one of those if I didn't have the real thing.

That looks so much better!!! Not all polymer stocks look bad, but some guns just deserve wood and the M1 carbine is one of them.

I know, but SWMBO doesn't like me wearing them outside.

Actually, I hate to admit it, but I got a pair of sneakers with white soles just to wear in the house (and a quick step outside). The slippers in the basement just end up hurting my back and knees. I need some kind of arch support and thicker sole.

I'm getting old. Everything's falling apart!

That's nice looking. I bought the same rifle and am thinking about changing to a wood stock. I'll have to keep an eye out for them. Thanks for the tip.

YK have you shot that rifle very much? My grandson, who already has a Henry .22, always wants to look at my M1 carbine and I was thinking about buying one. Product report?

Kid, I have the same question as Firefuzz, how does it shoot? I have been thinking about one, but when I googled it, there were what seemed to be a lot of problems with it. Oh by the way, the wood stock looks much better, you did good. God Bless.

+ 1 , also do the original M1 sights fit the Chiappa carbine?

Great Job. Be sure to let us know how it shoots and if it functions reliably.

Rob
Rob (and others) -

I need to take it out again with the new stock to really give a good range report. I think it can take the original rear sight for an M1 Carbine. It sports the same design now, though mostly polymer. The carbine does have built-in dovetail grooves to mount a scope if need be, which is a nice touch, as you really don't notice them when not in use. I have no intention on doing so; I have plenty of scoped .22's if I need to be that accurate.

So far, it has functioned flawlessly. All I have fed it is cheap bulk fodder too. It was "reasonably" accurate (minute of soda can), and that is all it is meant to be. If you want a super accurate gun, this is not the one to buy. The trigger on mine is gawd-awful - mushy with a lot of creep. It just doesn't feel right. Again, I will need to play with it some. I really bought it thinking about Grandchildren some day. It wouldn't be the first .22 I'd have anyone shoot, but it would be a fun gun to transition a shooter to the .30 M1 Carbine, then let them play with it with cheap ammo for casual plinking.

Perfect upgrade, looks so much more like the famous carbine. Amazing it dropped in, says a lot about thier focus on accuracy of reproduction.

Blasphamy! No gun nut in his right mind would ever say that, except in front of his wife! Some guns look OK with synthetic stocks some don't. The M1 definitely looks better with wood...
