I would have been out of there at the first shot. Uncle Sam had my word that I wouldn't run from gunfire when he told me to go, and I didn't. This situation is not the same, and I am not about to stay put when someone is sending rounds my direction nowadays. It doesn't matter if it was an accident. People still can die in accidents. The Range Safety Officer should have cleared the course before letting anyone touch live ammo.

The brass rat down range (he was picking up brass) is fairly deaf from what I hear. I guess he can't see rocks and dirt flying around either. lol EVERYONE there screwed up.

You can hear shots being fired on other near by ranges. With muffs on ,he had no idea the range was live. The RO should have made darn SURE the ange was clear before starting the shooter. Was there no other shooters on deck waiting their turn to notice the man down range???
In this type shooting and Cowboy Action, every person on the range is a Range Safety Officer even if they don't have the title or are acting as an official.

Sometimes -- and far too often -- people are just plain stupid!

About two years ago, I was shooting pistol at the local range. Had my ear muffs on; hearing aids off. I was on one end of the pistol range and another shooter was on the other. He gets up and goes out the door. I cocked the old single action, start to take aim, finger on the trigger, when all of a sudden I see movement. This guy was going down range to change his target!!. He never though that despite noise from the rifle range, and with my back towards him and wearing muffs that I could not hear him. And to this day, he still thinks that he did nothing wrong.

I now make sure that when I am shooting, I tell other shooters that when they are going to change targets, walk the line and tell everyone on the line what they are going to do as some shooters have hearing issues and cannot hear while wearing muffs.

Now flash back about 25 years. I was in the range office at good ol’ Chabot Gun Club, Castro Valley, CA, pasting targets when all of sudden the range office screams into the mike to cease fire. Seems as if some idiot started to walk down range during a shooting period to post a target. He was called to range office, read the riot act and when told to leave, he asked what was wrong. He said that it was OK as long as he walked in a straight line directly to his target as others who were shooting at their targets could not shoot him as they would be aiming at their own targets.

We can only hope that such people do not vote, drive, and reproduce....

That would have been a scary experience for all concerned.
I'll bet that shooters times went completely to manure for the rest of that day.

In the aviation industry we say it takes three factors to cause an accident. If any one of the factors was absent, the accident would not have occurred. I think that can be applied to a lot of facets of safety - in this case, i see three of the factors being 1) a shooting stage that was impossible to see through to the berm at almost any point. This could have been avoided by better stage design. 2) potential victim had ear muffs on while shots going off in other bays, 3) failure to verify the range was clear and possibly 4) partial deafness (mentioned above) by the potential victim. They were EXTREMELY lucky!

Epic failure by the Range Officer (Timer Operator)... I've RO'd hundreds and hundreds, if not many thousands, of shooting scenarios over the past 30 years... and each and every time, it's the RO's responsibility to make sure that all personnel are back from their respective duties (pasting/resetting targets, chief among them). Identify and know each person that's volunteered to assist you and where they're located before starting any shooter, doesn't matter how slow they are! Preferably behind the firing line! Somebody relieve that Timer Operator... If you're tired, give up the timer... I've seldom ran the timer for more that half of any shooting squad... I want my turn shooting also!

And the paperwork involved in the case of a shooting accident like this could have been, would be horrendous... even of the victim wasn't seriously wounded! Nothing that I'm sure the parties involved are not aware of... if not before, then I'm sure they are now.
