This is a nice original 1894 Marlin in 39-40. I took it for a couple of walks after rabbits. Yesterday the weather was in the 60's and it was as nice as a spring day in May. Today a bit cooler, but nice for February. The gun shoots great...

Some of the most "funest" guns to play with are the lever guns chambered for pistol calibers cartridges.
I noticed your Marlin is of the earlier variation with the full case colored receiver, unlike the later ones with the blued bolt.
I am amazed at your weather conditions. We dudes in the east are currently dealing with 0 degree temps. And you know our 0 temps are nastier than your 0 temps.
Let's hear about what you feed your 38-40's......after many years, after using about every conceivable load, I have settled on 9 grains of Herco and the Lyman 170 gr. bullet designed for the 40 s&w......it's a tc bevel base bullet and just glides up the ramp of every Marlin, Colt Lightning, Winchester, Remington 14 and 1/2, plus multitudes of single action Colts, DA Colts, and SA Rugers.------6
In North Dakota we haven't had rabbits to amount to anything for 20 years. They do seem to be coming back in the last year or two. honestly haven't shot one for 10+ years, probably closer to 15 because of that. Never ate one, but may try one of these years .
Looks like your having a blast out there Shrapnel, Rafter-7 just picked up a 44-40 close to the condition of your 38-40 in Vegas couple weeks ago. Rocky Mountain front sight is good. .

Six, isn't that why we have the 10mm. Kind of replaces all close to that caliber? Just sayin t

I use one load for all my 38-40's, 5.5 grains of Trail Boss and 180 grain cast bullets. It works well in rifles and handguns...
