R92 improvements

Ok I might as well start a thread on my 45 caliber R92

I bought Stevesgunz DVD. WHAT A BIG HELP. Very step by step. I have had a few issues going back that, looking back, was probably an issue before and i didn't notice. Steve has been really helpful helping me trouble shoot. I'm thankful for him.

Anyway, got the gun back together and it's nice n slick. But wouldnt load AT ALL. And would barely cycle. I checked the screws and found the bolt pin plug was binding the bolt. Loosened it and it cycled better but still would hardly load. I loosened the carrier screws and that helped a little. But it still is hard to load. And now you have to kill it closed to get a round to come into reciever under bolt. So i messaged Steve and he suggested the bolt may not be pushing the cartridge stop back all the way. So i pulled the mag tube and found that the stop is visible through the hole.

I took my punch and cannot move the stop in any more, so I'm thinking if i kiss that visible spot with a grinder to make it clear the cartridge opening that may fix both my issues. Waiting for Steve's reply. Anyone else got an idea here?

And while stocks are off, i will sand and apply tung oil...

. . . now if it were a Rock Island, I'd say don't worry - I majorly bubba'd the feeding ramp (frame type) on my son's 1911, and owned up to it when I called to see if they could fix it vs. me using it as a 'parts' gun. . . and they sent back what looks like a new frame with the same serial number. Plus, they did it in under two weeks, if I recall correctly...

I always appreciate when others make threads like this so i try to do the same...

I just rarely get this in depth with guns so i dont usually have much to contribute.

Thats the one that holds the trigger return spring. Aint too bothered by it.

Interesting thread. I have had mine apart several times in the 3 or 4 months I have had it but overall I haven't had any major issues as you are having.. I have the one continual issue that the hammer screw works itself loose every hundred rounds or so...I don't like the stock finish much but I can live with it.. I hate the black finish on the metal and am thinking I may color case harden it . I think CCH would look better than the black that is wearing off rapidly.. I have shot my R92 1700 rounds and dryfired it about 25,000 times.. It's going to look well worn by time it is one year old.

On Stevesguns site he mentions reworking the timing on some Rossies. I don't know what various symptoms would cause a gun to need that done to it but I 'spect the problem you are having is one of them.. Wonder how common that malfunction is?

I dont consider this a major issue. It does work... Just not as well as my 357 r92. I want it to feed smoother than it does is why i am trying to fix it. Steve suggested tweaking the ejector guide a slight bit to contact the cart stop sooner and more solidly. I will look closer before i grind or bend, but i dont think the stop will move anymore. If i determine it wont, i'll kiss that part a slight bit with my dremel tool. I will also pull the mag tube on my friend's 45 cal R92 and compare. I used to own it and fired many rounds thru it before he suckered me out of it.

so it's been buggin me all day. So i came straight home from work and started tinkering. With the 45 cal, it takes almost all available space for the cartridge to make it through the hole. While loading, the rim was literally hanging up on that protrusion. Using my punch, I tested the stop again to see if i could move it out of the way. I could not.

I removed the lever and slid the bolt back far enough to get the guide out and pulled the guide. I then removed the spring and put it back in the gun just for grins to see of the spring was binding. It was still exhibiting same symptoms. So out comes my Dremel. I ground just what you see in the first pic off the stop, checking 2-3 times so as not to take too much meat off the stop. Reinstalled and ran a few rounds through the loading process with just finger tension and it seemed better. So i reinstalled mag tube and tried 8 rounds. Loaded without a hitch. Fingers crossed!!

Starting levering and that dude was throwin em in there with basic finger pressure!

SUCCESS!!

Soon as the 4th coat Of tung oil dries I'll reassemble and take to the range. Will evaluate from there to see if i need to mod the forend and decide what sights i want.

I helped a friend slick up his .357 Rossi 92 -- not a complete ordeal, but there were a couple of times it was nice to have two pairs of hands, as well as 1.5 brains to study things out! Fortunately my .45 was so "right" right out of the box that I wouldn't dare try to "improve" it. No way I'd do anything but futz something up!
