I kin almost smell that deer liver, frying away - complete with some onions.................. Mnnnnnnn - yummie !
I can remember one evening on my 16th birthday, on the top of a mountain between Chicken and Eagle, gutting a caribou I had just shot. My dad reached in and hefted out the liver in both hands. Eyes wide and serious, he held it up and said, "If we take this home, your mom's gonna feed it to us!" and threw it as far as he could down the side of the mountain.
That's kind of how I feel about it too.
I like the small ones - they taste better, and they are easier to pack out, too. If I am thinking I might end up short on meat, I will go for the biggest animal I can find, if I have a choice, but if i'm not worried about that, I'll take a younger one, and I would rarely pass up a small animal that presents itself in the hopes of finding a bigger one. For me it is all about food.
Besides, that one is not so small. A couple years ago, my younger brother shot a Sitka blacktail that was about the size of a medium dog. He cooked it whole - in his kitchen oven. He said it looked bigger when he shot it.
