30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
I did a search cause I know this has been discussed but I'm obviously not good at using the search engine. Looking for suitable load data for both a winchester trapper and a marlin Texan in 30-30. Doesn't have to be same load. Looking for hunting loads. Does trapper need a different powder due to shorter barrel? Thanks for the help.

Mike, the internal search functions often don't work as well as a google search in a specific site.
If you go to google, then search" advanced search" it will give you goggles advanced search as an option. Go there, choose the search terms, then scroll down and it will say "site or domain" to search. Simplify the leverguns address to this http://www.levergunscommunity.com/ and it will only give results on that site.
This may be old hat to you, but its worked fairly well for me.
This was using "cast bullet Winchester trapper"
https://www.google.com/search?as_q=cast ... gws_rd=ssl
You can refine the search further if you need, like to specific calibers.

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
I use a 173gr Beartooth HCGC with a max charge of AA-5744 in my 30-30 for elk and incase I bump into a brn bear you can find the AA load data http://www.accuratepowder.com/load-data/ under the #5 edition. have used hornady and speer jacketed bullets and they work fine on elk with a edge to the speer 170 hot core it held up better than the hornady 170. Kinda depends on what your after and can bump into. danny

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
Two good loads for the Winchester Trapper are:
Lyman 311291, 25.0 gr of Alliant Reloder 7 for about 1,865 fps from the 16" barrel.
Another is the Lee 170 grain flat nose ahead of 24.5 grains of IMR 4198, getting about 1,900 fps.
Both loads will kill deer but i prefer to cast them reasonably soft, 14 to 16 BHN.

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
I use only two different 30-30 loads, don't need anything else.
The first is my hunting load and it does a great job on even elk. A Lyman 311041 and 28grs of 3031. I get about 2000fps and have never recovered on from a deer, black bear or elk. Kills like a sledge hammer, even on our larger Roosevelt elk, though within range. In 3 different 30-30's, I get accuracy down around
The other is an RCB308-150gr plain base and 10 grains of Unique, never chronographed it, but it can't be over 1200-1400fps. My granddaughters love that load and so do I for about 90% of my 30-30 shooting.

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
Mike, I cast with a Saeco #316 mold and use Hornady Gas-Checks (I think... bought the box of 1,000 over 20 years ago)... It drops them at 150.5 grains using WWs. I size them at .309 w/Lyman Alox lube, and load them over 27grains of RE-7. I've shot some very good groups with this load out of several model 94s. From my 26" octagon barrel (the only one I've chronographed), it gives 2190fps. Which in that rifle is a POI/POA match to factory Federal 150 jacketed FPs. I really only use it for competition on steel targets and so-called "practice" in place of using the factory jacketed stuff, which I can save for hunting.

Wouldn't the Lyman 311041fn/gc work better?william iorg wrote:Two good loads for the Winchester Trapper are:

Not as far as I am able to tell. The big round nose bullet penetrates beyond expectations and cast soft will slug-up its nose especially when bone is hit.
The only draw-back to the 311291 is you need to be careful when seating them to ensure the COAL will allow the to cycle in your rifle. The crimp groove could have been placed a few thousandths higher up the nose.
[Edit - Lost my mind. The point I wanted to make is the short barrel Trapper will not get a great deal of velocity and I prefer the deeper penetration of the 311291 over the flat nose bullets which from my molds, run about 10 grains lighter.

I would guess reloader 7 or imr 4198, but only a guess in short barrels. No proof.
Anything faster burning than 3031 couldn't hurt.

Mike, if you want to borrow and make your own, I have a 31141 Hp mold roughly 172 grains lubed and checked straight wheel wieghts. Never shot anything with it yet though.

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
RE-7 was my preferred powder in the 14" Contender for shooting steel. I worked up a load for the 150 spire points I used on the rams, then just seated 130 SP for turkeys and whatever 110 gr bullets I could find on the bargain tables for chickens and pigs. I would expect good things from it in your Trapper.

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
I had excellent results with a good number of Marlin's be it ballard or Micro shooting the Lyman 311041 and the Ranch Dog 311-165GC both pushed with 20-22 grains of XMP5744 . With a 24" barrel those loads generally Chrony in the 1900-2100 range .

Re: 30-30 cast bullet load data for trapper
I had the 311041 HP mold for awhile as well . With plain old WW alloy I needed to size at .312" or I'd bump the noce to much trying to get it thru a 309 or 310 sizer . But that was actually a good thing as I eventually went to sizing all my 30-30 bullets in a 312 size die and accuracy improved somewhat in all my 30-30 rifles with whatever cast bullet I was using .arjunky wrote:Mike, if you want to borrow and make your own, I have a 31141 Hp mold roughly 172 grains lubed and checked straight wheel wieghts. At .309 it would only go 1700 before leading in my 94 at the time.6pt-sika wrote:I had the 311041 HP mold for awhile as well .
