I'd love one of those for an archery target back-stop!
Those rolls are too loose. The hard packed bales are better by far.
round bales make great archery targets, you shoot the side of the roll not the end. Arrows disappear when shot in the end but only penetrate a few inches in the side.

That's right. They work great when shot from the side. When I was a kid, we'd also go out in the field before Dad picked up the bales and practice our 200 yard archery shots. Sorta like dropping morters.
Unbelievably backwards. Grass areas around roadways are contaminated with all kinds of nasty stuff and not fit for feed of any sort. Where do you think all that catalytic converter metal goes?
All use of roadway grasses illegal here.
U Michigan studying ways to reclaim heavy metals in grasses within 60' of roadway surfaces. Thought to be profitable within 2-3 years.

Farmers here think the same. Lots of broken glass still and metal pieces and dust.
The cattlemen I know in Nebraska won't touch the stuff, and don't want to run their equipment on the medians and shoulders due to all the "junk" those areas hold.

Your hay rolls must be packed tighter than the ones I've been around. My old #70 PSI would shoot through a solid packed square bale. I can stick my hand through the rounds that I'm familiar with.....

I haven't shot a round bale with an arrow in quite a few years, but those bales my father rolled would stop an arrow in half it's length. Of course back then I was only shooting a 50# bow.

I know the ROWs in Montana are not nearly as contaminated as they are in areas around Detroit. Alfalfa and sweet clover grow in the ditches there. A shame to waste good green feed when everything else is so dry.
