OT - Custom grip maker

Post by 95fan »

Can anyone recommend a grip maker or manufacturer who will make a custom color of laminate grips? I am looking for a set for my S&W 60.

These are from the hogue site. They have them for the 60. If you have the laminate that you want them made from they may do it for you.

Thanks, Steve

I tried the Hogue folks already, and they aren't interested in making up custom color variations. Unfortunately I do not have the laminate already so I need to find someone who will make it up for me. I am looking for a variation that I have not seen listed as a standard color on anyones site: emerald green and dark grey or black. I saw a set several years ago at a gun show and passed( I am still kicking myself) as I have not seen such a variation since.

All the producers of laminate items that I know of buy the semi-raw material (laminate) from factories which produce large quantities of such.

If you need the LAMINATE made up you might have to do that yourself. You need the materials, glue/epoxy and a press.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Ok, so the two of you are stranded on this island. It's very hot during the day, and gets chilly at night....

You'd build her a Gilligan's Island hut, provide her with food and a fire, and sleep at opposite ends of the island.

So says my wife. :?

And a vacuum chamber of some type to pull the air out. Without it the grain doesn't get saturated good enough to harden it well. BTDT

Thats what I was afraid of. It seems like the commercial laminates are impregnated through and through with some kind of resin. In any case it looks a bit more troublesome than a home glue up project.

There may be another option, but can't guarantee it would work.
If you are willing to use laminates of less than about 1/4" and probably 1/8 would be better. Marine epoxy resin will penetrate about 1/8" into wood without vacuuming and will give you a hardwearing, impact resistant finish, the only catch would be that you would need to laquer the finished grip with a UV stable finish such as marine laquer or spar varnish as epoxy is not UV stable by itself.

Bob, that is an interesting idea. I had not thought of using marine epoxy. I may try that out if I cannot find what I am looking for.

Rutland Plywood makes their "Dymondwood" in an Evergreen Camo that may be what you are looking for. That is the same stuff that Freedom Arms uses for their grips (in a different color). Maybe you can get someone to make you some grips from this material?

That is pretty close, although I did not see a way on their site to just order wood. I think I will give them a call as well. At this point I think I will probably end up making the grips myself, providing that I can find a supplier for the wood. Thanks for the link and the info.

Now, what "stuff" are you referring to as being drop dead gorgeous?
