load selection winchester 71

Post by cclark »

Okay....I am going to tell you guys my plan. Anyone who has any hates it here is your chance. I always am very careful about loading ammo. In this case I am loading for two rifles. I also don't load for other people. My buddy that started me on model 71's will be sitting next to me. I think I bought a very nice std 71 that has been well cared for and lightly used considering it was made in 1937. His is a 4 digit deluxe that is absolutely beautiful. With all that, I am probably overdoing it, but I don't want any stupid mistakes. Load data: CCI 200 LR primer, 65.0 grains H4831, 200 grain hornady flat point. Trim length will be 2.245", COL is 2.81". Velocity is 2316 FPS and pressure is 26,500 CUP. Looking at data, what I liked about the powder is it had the lowest pressure. What I don't like is I have 10 lbs of Varget and no H4831. I think my only question is how hard do I crimp? Also, the load data is straight from hogden, and is the starting load. Thank you. Chris

Chris, I have some load data for varget in a article by John Barsness I dig it up and post the loads. Use a Lee FCD you wont lose any cases like with a roll crimp and it takes a good crimp for that round. I have had good luck with the hdy 200 FP over 30" of penetration on elk. danny

Found it Handloader #275 dec2011. 200 gr hdy 58 gr Varget for 2565 fps and a 1.08 " group @100
also from Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges a article by Dave Scovill 200 gr hdy H4831 61 grs 2010fps,63 grs 2122 fps and 65 grs 2408 fps note 67 grs should be a max load for 2501 fps. Hodgdons 2014 Reloading magazine has load data for all their products.danny

I have used that powder in the 348, but 58.0 gr.. I like it. I would check that powder charge again just to make sure that is correct. It sounds a little much to me.

Correction, correction! I am using 4350, not 4831. I should learn to read better. Velocity with the IMR4350 is 2340fps.
