The Chopped & Channeled Side Lever...

Post by Old Ironsights »

I finally got around to taking advantage of a decent day and went out with the Eternal Project Gun to see if I built a tomato stake out of a war horse.

So... last pic of where I was:

Where it is today:

Image
So... I went out to the local unimproved USFS shooting area and dragged my Armorplate Gong out to 167 yds (I wanted 150, but my feet are less accurate than my rangefinder...)

Image
(look for the orange... you will find it eventually...)
Now, a few points to consider:

This gun was fired ONCE, for a total of 20 rounds, none from a bench, in 2010 when I received it. Then I went after it with a hacksaw.

Today, I fired it solely from the Kneeling Supported position... and after figuring out how far off the sights were started ringing the gong. (Note that the sights are (A) original/irons and (B) the front sight is attached to the barrel with a ring held by set screws... and I only eyeballed it into position...) It took a whole 18 rounds to get there...

Image
Unfortunately, the gun shoots about 8" high and 8" right at 167 with the rear sight bottomed out to 100m. :(

BUT, I have a taller front sight post AND will see to drifting the front sight once the new post is installed.

Also, FWIW:

FORTUNATELY, as demonstrated in the video I linked to earlier, mild steel core ammo doesn't hurt armorplate.
UNFORTUNATELY, missing the armorplate and hitting the 3/4" mild steel frame does significant damage...

Still, it was a good day out. 8)

You have an aftermarket buttplate on it.
How is the recoil?

Yes. It came with the accessory kit I bought. It's the main reason I chopped 2" off the stock.

Actually, quite a bit less than my 1899 in .308. The Comp/Flash hider from MosinPlus works really well considering it is not a "tight" muzzle brake.

Mosins were intended to be carried (by the Russians) with the bayonet more or less permanently attached.

That's why the gun doesn't shoot to POA, the bayonet is not attached.

This.

Russian philosophy at the time was that the rifle was the handle for the bayonet, the bayonet being the primary weapon and used in mass infantry charges. Russian soldiers were taught very little if any marksmanship, many went into battle having never fired a weapon. There is no bayonet frog on the Russian web gear, the bayonet is carried on the weapon at all times. Studying the pix of Russian soldiers from 1900 on, you will always see them with bayonets fixed. Nagant sights are regulated based on the weight of the bayonet being attached.

I popped the front sight off and carefully "reamed" the sight base to allow the pin to protrude further into the sight base. Staked it in place and moved on. I find the 18-20" bayonet makes the rifle a tad unwieldy and its hard on gun cases. Its not bad as the soviet screw driver if your stuck without.

Here's an interesting comparison for you...

I dropped my barreled action into an unmodified 91/30 stock so you can see just how much shorter it really is:
