Well, a lot would qualify: 20 Ga 870, Marlin 45/70, 45 Colt Ruger or 44 of some description, 22 rifle, pistol cartridge rifle. Hmmm???

That's a real good one. I wouldn't want to but for survival I'd have to add a scope.
I had that gun in 22 LR and I want it in 22 mag RF. One of the best of the best.
I think it beats the Marlin 39s I've had lots of experience with--and that takes some doing!

Re: You have one firearm to survive what is it?
Hmm, with that many folks gone, including much of the military, I'd take just about anything cuz I'm gonna be able to pickup whatever else I might need. Battlefields (I'm assuming the 90% of gone folks had a few that fought back, what was it Pullman said in Independence Day, "We will not go quietly into the night") are messy places littered with all sort of goodies. Heck, I might even find some alien weapons and put them to good use. One never knows.

I think the Savage M24 is a good choice. New ones like the one here look to be only available in .410 under 22lr or 22mag.
However, used guns are more caliber diverse.
22LR/20 Gauge (My choice)
.22WMR/20 Gauge
.22 Hornet/20 Gauge
.222 Rem/20 Gauge
.30-30/20 Gauge
.22 Hornet/12 Gauge
.222 Rem/12 Gauge
.223 Rem/20 Gauge
.223 Rem/12 Gauge
.30-30/12 Gauge
.357 Mag/20 Gauge

Rather have one of these from CZ myself if we were going for the rifle/shotgun combo. I like the idea of a 308 and a 12 gauge.

Of the rifles I do own, my custom 454 Puma would be the one. I could probably easily find a 12 gauge shotgun of some sort.

Thought a long time about this.
Went through a bunch of thoughts why this one, why that one ?
When the fog finally cleared for my needs here it will be what I already have.
This gun has proven to be in its 42 years of life 100% reliable and does so much.
Its light, short, fast shooting and handling, accurate.
My 1972 Ithaca Featherweight 20" smoothbore Deerslayer Deluxe 12ga.
And the following ammo

1666 rds of Winchester Super X 00 Buckshot
1666 rds of Winchester Super X Rifled Slugs

ya, I did the quick 5000 / 3 deal with that .66 extra in each being tossed. Thought close enough.
But, You are 100% correct, those two rds just might end up in time being very important.
So with that in mind thank you Sir, Give me another one of each 00 Buck and Rifled slug.

Even after reading all these replies, im still good with my choice of a 308 semiauto, --- i said a FAL or a hk91, But really -- any of em would do -----m1a's, BLRs , bolt rifles even. Its the cartridge thats most important

I used to just say my Marlin Mountie however my 10/22 takedown with the 25 round mags is as accurate and portable. The Mountie is probably still higher 'cause it is more PC.

did you look at the video I posted on the other thread....? can you really not get within 200 yards of the speed goats? that's with a smooth bore. with a rifled 10ga barrel you can get farther range than that....Mescalero wrote:Look at the pic of High Desert Hunter on the .45-70 thread................................. don't concentrate on him, look at the country..........

Re: You have one firearm to survive what is it?
Well let me see , the vierling idea suits me but I don't own one I do have several drillings one in 12-12 and 7x57R as well as a 16-16 7x57R . My third however in 16-16 and 10.75x65R Collath would probably be the better alternative as that one likes cast bullets quite a bit . So perhaps a drilling with quick detach claw mounts in 10 gauge 10 gauge and 444 Marlin would be about perfect for me as long as I have 1500 10 gauge hulls , 500 pieces of 444 brass , my PW rifle press and the MEC 600JR 10 gauge loader as well as six or seven bullet molds a goodly supply of H322 , SR 7625 , CCI 200's and any of the normal 209 primers . Ten or twelve bags of #4 and #8 shot along with may be 50 pounds of 0 buck should keep the ten gauge going . Oh yeah I left out maybe 100 pounds of wheelweight ingots .

Re: You have one firearm to survive what is it?
The reality is the firearms you need to survive are the ones you actually have. Just make sure you have the ability to reload or have a good muzzleloader. Perhaps the more primitive the rifle the better. A flintlock, a lot of powder and a good supply of flints.

Re: You have one firearm to survive what is it?
You see, these are my kind of cinema aliens-- They came, conquered with overwhelming force and strip mined the planet without resorting to mass land invasions and Will Smith/Jeff Goldblum exploitable plot devices. They probably dropped kinetic weaponry on us from orbit, eliminated most of the population centers before coming down to clean house.madman4570 wrote:After effects of what appears to be some type alien invasion that has reduced the populations by 90%
It appears they have done their deed will not be returning but now you have to deal with all issues that might occur for survival.
Nothing will be able to be imported or exported in or out of your state and things given that fact might get a little hairy.
No more China dealing you USA either
If you live in NYS you must stay in NYS etc.
Also they took 90% of crops and livestock. And all petro products.
Knee jerk reaction would be something like a baikal combo rifle for multi cal performance. With a few inserts, I could cover a wide range of popular rounds I'm bound to encounter. I would be well behind the power curve if it came down to resource competition, however. Single shot puts you at a marked disadvantage in engagements you can't carefully preplan. A 12 gauge pump could work. It's heavier, but that seems to be the least of our problems. Inserts would probably still work, even if you had to load them one by one and I'd be able to have a fair rate otherwise.
I'd love to go with mag/semi, but I'm worried about complexity of mechanism and replacement parts. Ammunition should be plentiful in 556 which is a decent all around cartridge... Unless we shot them all up or they were vaporized when most of the cities were razed. Stepping back in terms of tech and reliability, a lever gun in 30-30 certainly gives you lead downrange in an effective caliber. The mechanism is simplistic for repair and the ammunition should be easy to come by in some form or another.
So probably a 12ga or 30-30 lever if things were bad-bad. Otherwise an AR or some 556 flavored rifle if there was an abundance of material available for ammunition and replacement parts, ie; 90% of the population is dead, but the guns are still left over.

Re: You have one firearm to survive what is it?
I think I would just opt for a Custom Mauser Carbine with a 20 inch barrel, in .308 or even 30-06, Full length Manlicher Stock, Fixed Express sights perfectly sighted in to point of aim at 200yds and a good 2 x 7 variable scope with QD rings that return to zero every time.
However, if there were still laws being inforced regarding the carrying of weapons, etc that I had to contend with, then I might just opt for a high end Wilson Combat 5 inch 1911 with night sights, maybe. Besides, if I need a rifle, there will probably be some laying around.

The rule said ONE rifle and 5000 rounds. So I am going to have a Hawkens Flintlock with a tang sight. I am going to practice getting three shots off in a minute. That is going to be enough for meat and predators. For defense well - how did the homesteaders get on in 1848?

You know Grizz it is a Leverguns forum after all. So it must be a Levergun. My .357 magnum in 24 inch octagonal. 5000 rounds of the best magnum I can get. Now I feel like a more secure Homesteader. The Hawkens I will leave in the barn for the wife (one gun each right, a one for each son - that makes four rifles and 20,000 rounds of ammo)

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws
"first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.

Good way to go. Good for long-range, close range, compact, light rifle wit compact, light ammo, good for moose, good for varmints, can be used for bear or bison if necessary. It is a great caliber for an all-around, all purpose rifle.Mescalero wrote:In the beginning of the post I said mini mauser in 6.5 Grendel.

good choice....Pete44ru wrote:.
My choice would be a Vierling, with a .22Hornet bbl over two 20ga SXS bbls, and a .30-30 bbl underneath.

I like that. A lot. Make sure it has a .308 & .223 insert too and it would be about perfect.7.62 Precision wrote:

I think I'd choose the same thing our forefathers did, the gun that really won the west. A single-shot 12 gauge. Light, handy, reliable as gravity and capable of taking anything on the North American continent, from tree rats to grizzlies.
