I've heard of those calls... hanging up is the right thing to do, unless you enjoy messing with them first

Just occurred to me - they must have heard you got your laptop fixed up to be popup proof

I got two calls from them last week about 15 minutes apart. I advised the second one to please notice the mistletoe attached to my coat tail..

Had one a few weeks back like that. I really wished I'd had more time to mess with them. I did for a bit, but had to get onto more important things. I try to keep those types of folks on the line for a while if I can. Heck, I might as well cost them some time and money if I can.

Call your local PD Computer Crimes division. Most smaller departments don't have one, but maybe they'll put you in touch with the State or County department in your area that does. Report the incoming call number and the content of the call. It IS a crime in most states.

Heck, we get a dozen of them a week.
Let them rabbit on for a while, slowly go through the motions, then when you can't stall any longer tell them that you don't have the internet or that you run a Linux computer.

Griff's idea would probably be a waste of time because odds are the calls are coming from India or Bangladesh or some place like that.

Or tell them that "Sorry, this is a top-security line and all calls are traced; if you were not given clearance to dial this number, I suggest you leave the area where your phone is and not return until our security team arrives to clear the area..."

One of these idiots rang my 83year old mum.

"You are a virus on your computer which is affecting the internet, you need to deal with it straight away as you are infecting thousands of people across the world." ( his exact words bad grammar and all)

My service will cost $US200 which I will charge to your credit card.

"Interesting" said mum

" We don't have a computer! "
She hung up.

The call I love the most is when some rings up trying to sell you a new kitchen.

"Sure, I'll take two." Bill my landlord.

The other day I wanted to ring an appliance store in the town I live. My call was diverted to India when the technical advisor was trying hard to help while at the same time appearing to know my local area.

"Look, I want to speak to Mitch, if that's okay with you." I said.

So after several minutes the call was redirected back.
