What powder for 7mm Spanish Mauser (Table Data)

Post by FatJackDurham »

I need to choose a new powder for load my 7mm Mauser Rolling Block No. 5. Here are the loads for my bullet weight from the Hodgdon site. I'd like to know what the opinions are of these powders. The store I goto sometimes has Alliant or Accurate loads, but these were also listed in my Lyman book, so I think I'll stick with this.

What do you think is a good powder here for me to get. I only want to get one right now, to see how the gun shoots. I was going to load up 50 bullets, in sets of 5 with maybe a half grain difference between them between min and max to see how it shoots. I know the store I go to has H4350.

Another thing, the Winchester powder was spherical in the 7mm Mauser ammo I bought before. Are any of these ball powders and if so, do you really need to use a magnum primer? I don't mind, in fact, I use magnum primers with my 45-70 BP loads, so it'd just be one less thing to buy separately if I do.

Any way, chip in, let me know what you think of these powders and what I should get.

If your store has it in stock, you won't go wrong with the 4350. That said, the H414 is a ball powder and so will meter very nicely (I would use a magnum primer with the H414).

I load the 7mm Mauser with IMR 4350 and 4064 both with good success. I have had higher pressures with the ball powders in my rifle, but they sure do meter nice has stated.
I would try the 4350 first.

Right. Good enough for me. It's 4350 and some Federal Large Rifle with fries.

I like Varget. It wont win any velocity races with many other powders but it has been super accurate in every caliber I have used it in. I will sacrifice a couple % of speed for accuracy any day.
It`s worth a try.

Well, I loaded up about 35 rounds or so. I'll hit the range this weekend and post the results.
