I need another coat or two of oil and then add a little smuck in a few areas to complete it. I've been working on it for over a year now. It's for me so it has been something I work on between other client's work. I made most everything on the rifle. It has a Rice "B" weight .50 barrel that is 44" long and I used part of a Jim Chambers gun makers lock. All of the hardware and double set triggers I made. I also made the cock(hammer), frizzen and frizzen spring for the lock. Even the wood screws are hand made on this one. It has been "aged" to look like it has been used but not abused. I can't wait to get out and shoot it. I'm hoping it shoots as well as the last Rice barrel I had. I don't know how the photo's are going to turn out this photo bucket deal aint working so well for me.
That's a real work of art! I especially like the dark stain and the full length stock. I was excited to see the lock on the proper side for a change!
I've taken a lot of good-natured ribbing over the years about my left handed Hawken flinter, so I just tell them that some rifles have the lock on the right side, and some have it on the proper side.

Being ignorant, and without shame: Wouldn't having the lock on The Proper Side be painful, having it go off in your face?

Blain, not really. I've shot right handed flinters for years with no problems. The flash isn't huge and most of the time it stays forward of your face. Once in a while it will come back at you with a few sparks but it can happen when the lock is on the "right" side also. The biggest danger is someone standing next to you on the lock side. When the main charge goes off it shoots out a nice flame from the touch hole in the barrel. When you see guy's that are in mock battles they have a flash guard to keep the flame from burning the guy next to them.
What a gorgeous smoker. Having the lock on the "right" side make me wish I'd had stayed shooting BP.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
One thing I'do though. Lose the feather. Here in Fla I got a talkin to by a game warden once for the same thing. After trying to reason with him I just got rid of it to avoid the trouble.

It's easier to fool people than it is to convince them they have been fooled.
Thanks for all the compliments guys. Ian Pratt has been my mentor for a few years now. He's very talented and really knows how to explain how things are done. My work has really jumped a notch since Ian has been helping me. Rusty, the feather is not there now. It was laying in the yard the day I took the photo's so I tucked it in. I've known several folks that have had the same problem you had.
