Looking for Advice
Okay, ladies and gents, I need some advice.
Some years ago I acquired a Norinco GI 45. It shoots well enough, and the
trigger is good for a carry gun. Here's the problem: The lugs on the top
of the barrel are getting rounded over. I did some research, and my gun
seems to be one of the early imports where the slide was machined wrong.
When the barrel goes into battery, not enough of the lugs engage the slide,
so the tops of 'em are getting rounded over. I've got a few choices:
1. Slap a 22 conversion kit on it and call it good. Except that I already have
one of those, it's a good choice. I guess two wouldn't actually hurt me.....
2. Refit a new barrel with a longer link, which may or may not fix the problem.
3. This is the most interesting option to me, which is to put a 9mm top
end on it. Who makes a good one?
4. Move it along for what I can get (how much?!) and buy a new Remington.
What's your advice and why?

Re: Looking for Advice
#1, then turn your other one back into a 45, or if it is 'dedicated' and not convertible back to 45, do #1 and see which you like better and sell the other one.

Re: Looking for Advice
How long have U shot it with the current barrel ? Slap a new barrel on it and go for it'. Why complicate things.

If #4, there are better values out there than the Remington carry gun.

Re: Looking for Advice
I've looked into doing this a couple of times off and on over the years and it's more than just a top end swap. At a minimum the ejector has to be changed as well and maybe some other items but I don't recall all of it offhand.stretch wrote: 3. Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

Re: Looking for Advice
#2. Then, and only then, #4. A good 1911 guy can fix that with a longer link and a newly fitted barrel, as long as the slots in the top of the slide are not getting rounded over also. Then it might become cost prohibitive to fix and sell...
Never sell a defective gun to an unsuspecting buyer. If you tell 'em the problem and they wanna go ahead... well... go ahead!

Okay, moving it on seems to be the choice here, although
I gotta admit, the conversion still intrigues me.
Griff, the slots in the slide are fine - the slides on these
things are wicked hard. Your sale advice is noted.
Thanks, gents.

How about something different? CCU from mech tech, these things are a blast, and pretty accurate.

Hey, wolfdog - that's not a bad idea! A tactical
carbine in 45 ACP. Maybe a flashlight on it - there's
some possibilities there.
I actually fired one of those several years back,
just didn't put 2 and 2 together. Hmmmm.....

I swear by my Marlin camp carbine, it will be with me on my death bed.
Not that much difference.
Think on it.

If you pass it on and get what you can out of it, JUST BE HONEST with the buyer!
Personally, I think the gun is still salvagable and is not the lost cause some might declare it to be.
