I like the concept, and Ruger's execution, except for the laminated stock. But that's just me. Still, I think I'll stick with my Springfield Scout/Squad as it just seems to fit me real well. Heavy bugger but I like it.

Isn't that only a 16" barrel? I think I would want about 4" more on a .308 tube, the blast has to be some kind of mean... But I do live the concept and the looks.
My version of an EBR. I have three tens and two fives for hunting...I think a few more 10s will do nicely.
I hope it shoots, cause that is one ugly dawg!! To interest me, the mags need to be 20 rounds and it needs to be a semi auto instead of a bolt. Just one guys opinion.
I like the concept and Ruger's execution of it. Looks good to me as well, but then I don't expect a modern utility/scout rifle to look "traditional", either...

Well to a CNN news anchor it looks like a Glock.

I'd be interested in an opinion on what it's like to carry around for several hours, how it handles, how that scout set-up handles dusk to dawn, etc.
Maybe you read something that helped you to decide on the purchase.
Looks like it's got a nice place to sleep...
Not yet...Although, It's about the same size/length/configuration as my 1895GS, and I've humped that one around for years....I love the scout scope concept and shoot well with it. The quick release rings on the 1895GS maintain the POI very well even though I take the scope on and off several times....I expect that the 45-70 with my loads recoil a bit more than a .308.....The Marlin has ports, so it's prolly a toss up which one is more audibly painful.

Thanks Blaine,
I've always seen value in the scout concept. I think it's detractors look for it to be the best at something and that's really not the point.
I also can mount an aimpoint R-1 on the rear base and a surefire in an offset mount on the forward one. Makes a good all around package. I have a complete spare bolt headspaced that will just slip right in. Plenty of backup and redundant parts just in case.

There's one of them at a local gun shop that I looked at a couple of times, just to get a feel for it. It's been sitting there for quite some time because being a left handed model. Wouldn't mind owning one though.
No I had not seen that rifle. Didnt know Ruger was making'em.. I would like to have one zactly like it.....I am carving same color laminated stock for a highwall right now..I expect it will be ugly to some folks. But I am building it for me...Thinking I might put laminated on next Winchester 1873 I am also finishing..Always Interesting to read what other folks think but the man cutting the checks gets to make the choices...I'll decide if I really like laminated after I've owned/used one for myself..
Neat rifle, but not crazy about the box sticking out so far. It seems it would be in the way when carrying.
Once was around a guy shooting a .308 with a short barrel and it gave me a bad headache and he was several benches down. It may have been because of the roof over the shooting tables.
How do you like the sights on the Ruger. They look nice in the photo's but I've never seen one to handle.
I handled one of those not long ago, was very tempted. I love .308s.
Here's my Poor Man's scout rifle. I have a mount on the way that replaces the rear sight.
It's an Indian Ishapore that Gibbs made into a fake jungle carbine. Surprisingly accurate
and only paid $50 for it!

I have always liked Col. Cooper's "scout rifle" vision.
And while I really like the concept in the Ruger version, I have heard mixed reports. Not so much on accuracy but more on loose magazine fit/magazine rattle.
Doesn't it use FAL magazines ? I can't remember...

2ndovc,
I really like your Ishy. Some people don't care for the detatchable mag on the new Ruger prefering to load with stripper clips. I like it cause if you decide to mount a conventional scope it still has quick reloading capability. You sir have the best of both worlds.

Very cool gun! I like the hacked down enfield too. I got to handle a trapper length 1885 highwall recently, i suppose that'd be heresy to some but i thought it was pretty cool and handy. One in 38-55 would be pretty neat. I also love some of the sporterized and scouterized krags i see. There's a feller who makes picatinny rails that mount in the rear sight base-great way to breathe life into older guns that our forefathers have hacked up.
