Opinions on Henry 18" 22 cal rifle

Post by Treeman72 »

In light of increasing ammo prices and what not, I'm looking for opinions on the Henry. It shoots 22 shorts, which is about the only 22 ammo available. $269 for a new one at my local sporting goods store.

Would that be a good addition to my lever arsenal?

I've had a H001 for several years and I like it. Its accurate and feeds pretty much anything I put in it. Now the front sight is a piece o junk but whatcha gonna do for that price. I say get one and enjoy. tom

I have one of the .22 lr versions, and it is a great little gun. You will not be disappointed. If, for some reason, it should need to go back to the factory, the service has a great reputation. 86er had to send his back. He posted that he found the factory service to be excellent.

My 22 lr supply is only about 450 rounds. The ability of the Henry to shoot lr and shorts is quite nice. Only 22 shorts available in my area at this time. I bought 650 wmr in the past couple weeks, so pretty satisfied with that for my 9422m.

I have 3 of 'em and love 'em. I had one that would not do better than an inch at 25 yds off the bench. Had occasional flier too. Sent it in and got back new barrel, sights, smooth and light trigger. Shoots 1/2 in at 25 yds consistently. We use one with shorts of CB Caps for garage and yard shooting and never put LR in it. Works great and very accurate. Plus, I really appreciate this companies principles.

That IS important, IMHO.

I've seen a number of them with problems straight from the box, but the company always seems to make any problems right. I guess you can't really expect a 9422 for the Henry price though.

I have a large loop Henry .22, outstanding gun right out of the box. Smooth, excellent fit and finish, and the wood is way too nice for the price, I don't know how they do it. All American made. If you email them the President will contact you back and solve your problem if you have one. You will not regret getting a Henry.

Henry levers are wonderfully smooth and easy. Pump version has nice heft, but is not as smooth to cycle, especially compared to a real winchester pump.

Hard to beat. A quality American made traditional lever for a reasonable price. :D

22 short $7 per box of 50 @ local WalMart. They had 3 boxes.

Was $3.27 at my wally world for golden bullet shorts. They have about 20 in stock. Sadly, the Henry got sold at my local shop. I do hope that they get another in.

I bought a used one - is marked with NRA engraving - is from a friends of NRA dinner I think. But otherwise, it's a standard .22LR and shoots great! Can't say enough good about it. The only thing I wish they'd do different is the sights - don't really like the plastic but they do function just fine...

Gentlemen,

Henry stopped putting plastic sights on their .22, H001-series leverguns a few years ago. Now, you can even get a HiViz metal sight for them:

The design of these rifles goes back over 40 years. Erma, of Germany, made them for Ithaca, IverJohnson, and Excam. Erma also sold them. Henry Repeating Arms Company bought all of the machinery, when Erma went out of business, in the late 1990s. They are currently made in New Jersey. The reciever cover, and the reciever, are made of ZAMAC (an alloy of Zinc), with the rest of the parts made of steel. My Henry H001L has in excess of 10,000 rounds through it. Here is some reference material, from my library, and from other sources:
