Pitchy,
Minus 2 when I did stalls yesterday AM, (made for easy pickin' at least), the walk to the upper pasture with my two girls was even colder, dang turkeys wouldn't move off the manure pile as we went by, had two deer gleaning the grain/hay by the gate and they didn't want to move either.
Funny, but the horses don't mind the deer coming in during cold weather, just sort of ignore them. In warm weather they will drive them off. They never like the turkeys, pin there ears and run at them, but let them have the manure pile to themselves. I find that those quiet, cold walks can be the best part of my day.
Thanks gents, they`er saying the coldest temps in four years coming the next few days.
Will keep ya posted, bet it don`t beat 96 though, -59 degrees actual temp.

Won't beat '76-'77 here. We had -42 at 5:00 am Jan. 14-15 if I remember. Living in the old farm house down the road from here with my bride to be and a couple of black labs. Came home from working 2nd shift at IH in Portland, I couldn't chuck wood into the Home Comfort in the kitchen fast enough to thaw the kitchen sink out. The Heatrola in the living room got glowing red and barely took the chill off. Crawled in with that 22 yr old gal and still have her..... Ever read Jack London? Said if you spit at -40 it will crack and freeze before it hits the ground, it did, I'll never forget it!
They are sayin' highs in the teens, lows in the teens below for us this week, early spring! I love this global warming!!
Great photos, Pitchy. It is always nice to get into the bush. Even nicer if you have a thermos of hot tea or coffee along.

Beautiful woods, probably not too different than ADK in New York. Looks like spruce, fir, aspen, birch and couple other hardwoods mixed in. Any jack pine or white pine present?
Coldest I've experienced is minus 38 F. My warmest clothes weren't good enough. Eyelids try to freeze shut, and your drippy nose freezes. Strange sense of pride living in a rugged climate.
When I drove home from work tonight at 6:30 pm it was still 61 degrees out. I didn't even need a jacket. Quite the difference, is it not?

Keep a eye out for our Snoopy dog heading north piller, he was lost down just East of Trinity.
Thanks gents, -20 this morn and the coldest isn`t here yet.

Wow! Y'all make me cold just listening to you talk about those temperatures. Lenn, I enjoyed the photos. Looks like you are getting some of that snow you've been wanting.

I was looking at those pictures and that fire sure looked good. But even I, way over here in Canada, still felt the empty space left by Snoop dog. We have an empty spot like that right now too. Come spring, we're planning to get a pup; maybe a Newfoundland.

I will keep an eye out. If I happen to see him, I'll do all I can to help him get home safely.

Pitch, like Kirk D. said, seeing you in the pics without ole Snoop leaves sadness in me for the both of you... and I still keep hopen you will get a call saying that the Snoop is found.
And as for the cold Pitch, if I remember right, for at least three days it didn't come up to -40...That cold, makes a guy wonder why he's in this blasted cold country...Specially when trying to clean barn and the manure freezes to the spreader... Not fun,

Pitch, keep that homefire burning. A Minnesota pal once told me that it can get so cold that a guy's pee can freeze before it hits the snow!
It's been in the teens and 20s at night here for the last couple of weeks -- a long cold spell for this part of Oregon, and we are on our 9th day with only a trickle of water from the well. I don't know where the pipe runs so can't figure where it is frozen. We'd be completely out of luck with anything approaching your temps!
Real nice 76, by the way.
Hope those pipes thaw before they break Bill, when i was a kid a water pipe under ground used to freeze and they would hook a welder to it and warm it up to thaw it out.

Great pictures! Took my little boy out to play in the snow last night as he was getting cabin fever. He asked why is the new snow so soft but the old snow underneath is so hard. I laughed and explained the soft snow we used for snowball fights almost melted and then froze into ice( hard snow ). He got the drift!
