Winchester 94 and Round Nose Cartridges
Hi, I'm just got a Winchester 94 and am new to Lever Action Rifles. I read on the net that you have to be careful what ammo you load in the tube, because a pointed bullet could set off the the primer on the bullet in front of it. I just bought some Federal Power Shok 30-30 Soft Point Round Nose and wanted to ask you guys if it is safe to use in my 94. Thanks

jf19451,
The original ammunition loaded by Winchester for the Winchester 1894s back in 1894 had round nosed bullets with lead tips. The only time you might run into problem is if you use military style FMJ or some really pointy hunting bullets without a lead tip in a tube magazine. Using any round nose or flat nose with lead at the tip is safe.

Any factory-loaded .30-30 load will be safe in a tube-magazine levergun -- unless they have glaring warnings on the box, and I have never seen one. They well know that's where 99.9%+ of it will go, and they've been loading for those guns for over a century.

Welcome to the fire,
as the others have said, your RN ammo will be fine in a tube magazine..

Welcome and the 94 is a fine rifle. My 32 Special ammo from awhile ago is all round nose. Hornady makes a soft tipped spitzer for the levers called Leverevolution in some cartridges. It is safe and pointy.

Absolutely. Just what I've used for hunting w/my .30-30s for years. Federal's new 150 grain Power-Shok is a FN, but their older version and Remingtons are round-nose bullets. Since the case is tapered and bottle-necked, they don't lay nose to primer in the mag tube like the straighter .38-55, I still wouldn't use a pointed bullet as they can jump under recoil, and who knows where the tip would end up. Who needs a pointy bullet at .30-30 ballistics anyway!
